Saint Sofia Church, Sofia
(4.1/5 based on 480 reviews on the web)
Sixth-century Saint Sofia Church gave its name to the city. Built on the necropolis of the ancient city of Serdika, the church is one of the most valuable pieces of early Christian architecture in southeastern Europe. According to popular lore, St. Sophia's miraculous powers protected the building over the centuries, withstanding Turks and earthquakes. Walk on floors covered with early Christian ornamental flora- and fauna-themed mosaics. See the icons depicting Sophia, the Divine Wisdom, portrayed as a young figure of Christ seated on a rainbow. • Hagia Sophia, the Church symbol of Bulgarian capital dates to the Byzantine period, built in the 6th century, on the site where it stood since the time of the THRACIANS and then Romans, places of worship. The Church is dedicated to "divine wisdom" of God, Sancta Sophia in Latin characters. In one of the pictures of the Church of divine wisdom is represented by a woman surrounded by three other representing faith, hope and love. The Church was destroyed and rebuilt many times, even for different denominations. In the 16th century it was converted into a mosque, were then destroyed all the frescoes and added a minaret which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century. In a second earthquake collapsed portions of the mosque and the Imam was killed. The Turks interpreted this as a bad omen and abandoned the site.

  • You can visit the dungeons of the Church with 6 more 15 lever lever if you want to photograph. There are tombs and mosaics to see well preserved. Worth a visit for 20 minutes without expecting anything, perhaps it is more interesting to the Church standing above but here you may not photograph.
