Natural History Museum Museum
Reputed to be the largest of its kind in the Balkans, National Museum of Natural History holds a substantial collection of preserved animals, minerals, and scientific information. The collection consists of over 400 mammals, 1,200 bird species, and hundreds of thousands of invertebrates. In addition, it preserves samples of nearly one-quarter of all known mineral species. Here you can see a bear standing on two legs and a tiger roaring. Observe numerous fossils and read information about each specimen. Walk around 15 halls spread throughout four floors, and explore nature up close. To avoid heavy traffic in the area, use public transportation to get here. Where to stay in Sofia

Set yourself up for easy and convenient access to Sofia's historical core and its most popular tourist sites by staying in an upscale hotel in the city center. While you'll find some hotels on the main boulevard, look for modern hotels off the main streets to keep costs lower. Staying outside the center in the outlying neighborhoods means you'll need to use public transportation, but the network is extensive and accommodation prices farther out are lower. For a real budget-friendly option, consider staying in a hostel; the city boasts a wide array of these, many of which include breakfast.

  • This museum opens at 10 Am and closes at 6 pm ( last tickets can be bought at 5 pm). The ticket cost 1 leva ( 2 euro) for students and retired people (they don't check if you are truly a student). The...  more »
  • Unfortunately, it is a little boring. There is a lot of flats with different kind of history stuff. But I think it's funnier for kids and younger people. :)  more »
  • Quite refreshing to visit a good old fashioned museum. No trendy ideas here, just lots of exhibits in lots of glass cases.Everything that ever walked the earth seems to be stuffed and displayed. Its i...  more »

  • This is a brilliant example of what a museum should be. Cost the equivalent of about £1.20 to get in and was allowed to take photos. If you are a tourist in Sofia this is definitely worth a visit, and if you spend a little time to learn Cyrillic, you'll be surprised at how many words you can pick out.
  • Some of the best taxidermy I've ever seen. Very well preserved animals from all over the world. Wish more was in English, but good if you have an hour or so to kill. 2.50 euro each.
  • I happened to visit on a very quiet day and so ended up being the only one there (minus the staff). It was an interesting experience, walking around and being alone with all of the animals. They have a good variety and I'd definitely recommend going if you have children with you. I enjoyed it but wouldn't say that it's a must-do unless you have an extra few hours to kill.
  • I almost spent my childhood there :) besides the games with friends, of course. I really loved this museum with it's rich mineral, insects, birds and more collections. But now is a bit sad place, lots of parts of the exhibits are gone, some of the showcases are empty or look dusty and forgotten. Definitely needs new exhibits, renovation and modernisation. I rate it high because of my love and nostalgia for the good times of this place. Yet it deserves to be visited at least for the minerals and exceptional fossils.
  • Great location, great building (from outside), missing a lack of care for the place, but definitely u have to see for yourself!
