National Institute of Archaeology with Museum, Sofia
(4.4/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
At National Institute of Archaeology with Museum, see tombstones, statues of idols, ceramics, and other artifacts that were found along the shores of the Black and Aegean seas. The museum's headquarters is in a former 15th-century mosque. At the main entrance, see the full-size copy of the 23 m (75 ft) high Madara Horseman, a medieval rock relief. The exhibits in the main hall feature finds from the late Bronze Age through the late Middle Ages. You can examine tools, figures made of clay and bone, and ceramic models of residential buildings and ovens in the prehistory hall. Don't miss the Roman and Greek portrait statues and a rich collection of paintings from the Bulgarian Middle Ages. • This is a terrific museum, with incredible artefacts from early times. This is in an old mosque. There are lockers for your rucksacks but there are no refreshment facilities so have a drink at the Mus...  more »
  • This was a little difficult to find. A good museum and very reasonable at 10lv for a family of four. Some stunning exhibits.
  • The impressive building and Russian architecture is based on a previous "spa" already, so that part of the building is still used as a Spa (hot water dark sulphuric smell of rotten eggs). The Museum is worth a visit not only for the extra space but also because of the dislocation and presentation of exhibits, located on two floors, where there is a very functional room in which is contained the treasure (gold and silver jewelry). The Museum is located in the heart of Sofia within walking distance from the underground station of Serdica. The exhibits are well catalogued and the Museum does not appear to visit overwhelming for the number of pieces on display.
