National Institute of Archaeology with Museum, Sofia

(4.3/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
At National Institute of Archaeology with Museum, see tombstones, statues of idols, ceramics, and other artifacts that were found along the shores of the Black and Aegean seas. The museum's headquarters is in a former 15th-century mosque. At the main entrance, see the full-size copy of the 23 m (75 ft) high Madara Horseman, a medieval rock relief. The exhibits in the main hall feature finds from the late Bronze Age through the late Middle Ages. You can examine tools, figures made of clay and bone, and ceramic models of residential buildings and ovens in the prehistory hall. Don't miss the Roman and Greek portrait statues and a rich collection of paintings from the Bulgarian Middle Ages.
