National Historical Museum, Sofia
(4.2/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Discover 8,000 years of Bulgaria's natural history at National Historical Museum. The museum features 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine art, history, and ethnography. The building looks more like a communist palace than a museum, as it is a former governmental residence. Explore a rich collection of stone columns and antique and medieval monuments in the museum's courtyard. The 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire are covered in two displays. Climb to the third floor to see the hall of traditional clothes. Most descriptions are in both Bulgarian and English. • It is very nice inside and outside a museum. The exhibitions are interesting, but we missed many things a bit of a story. As a result, it came across as especially loose exhibited objects. We were a little bit familiar with the history of Sofia and Bulgaria, partly thanks to a tour the day before where we explained things, but it was tricky really all link to each other and us to live in what all was going on earlier in Bulgaria. The museum is still recommended, but we had some more of expected.

  • Its huge exhibition halls were adequate for different groups of tourists. Its well ventilated with adequate museum pieces not seen in other museums. Worth a visit.
  • The darkness. Sophia sank into merzopakostnejshuju weather that has exacerbated the impression of this, frankly, "no" of the city. Sleet covered the broken sidewalks and increased injury risk. It was decided to visit something abstract. Selected historical Museum. The car I drove long past houses that look like after bombing or 6-magnitude earthquake. Then through the fog appeared pines and the beautiful gate. To the left of the entrance were combat aircraft. Mi 24 I learned and full fog machine friend. A little stroll on the wide field 200 meters) and marbles and opened a museum. Squat spacious building, filled, as it seemed to me interest on 40-50. It means there is an incentive to continue searching for "history". And the fact that modern Bulgarians story dosed very selectively, it became clear almost immediately. On the other hand, everyone wants to show off good and hide not quite good, which in the story "bratushek" was very very much. Take part in all the wars on the side of the enemies of Russia and the USSR. But won't the sad. The most worthy of a section (from my perspective)-Gold first owners of this territory. I have the opportunity to compare this exposure with other global meetings. A decent collection of jewelry manufactured in ancient times. A very detailed guide to good English told not only typical tales of selected exhibits, but also to respond to any question. Therefore, the tour lasted for far greater time. Thanks to her! Well, when we went to the Central Hall, panoramic glass opened this winter with a soft falling snow, forested mountains and ski slopes between pine trees.

  • Fairly poor national history museum, there is no logical story of Bulgarian history, just a few disjointed exhibits. There is very little writing to explain the importance of the displays. The displays are reasonably interesting, just not presented well. The museum location is also a huge pain being so far out of the city and not well serviced by public transport. It was a real shame. Save yourself 10 lev and do the free walking tour. Free wifi is a plus.
  • Been there twice. While there are lots of exhibits worth seeing, the info about them is oftentimes rather poor. Overall, the navigation between the halls is confusing even for people with some knowledge of BG history. The majority of the staff is unfriendly and some of them are visibly unmotivated (e.g., discussing loudly personal matters on the job or snapping at visitors' questions).
  • There's a reasonable overview of Sofia's history, and some of the artifacts are genuinely interesting. It's good value for students, as entry is only one leva!
  • Quite frankly, I had higher expectations for the exhibits. The building itself is arguably the better showpiece. It's still worth a visit, though.
  • It was amazing, interesting stuff about our Bulgarian history, real clothes of important people in the history, weapons, medals and a lot more to discover!
