National Historical Museum, Sofia

(4.1/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Discover 8,000 years of Bulgaria's natural history at National Historical Museum. The museum features 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine art, history, and ethnography. The building looks more like a communist palace than a museum, as it is a former governmental residence. Explore a rich collection of stone columns and antique and medieval monuments in the museum's courtyard. The 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire are covered in two displays. Climb to the third floor to see the hall of traditional clothes. Most descriptions are in both Bulgarian and English. • Let's start with the building. This building was formerly the Presidential Palace during the Communist era, and it is a true 1960s Brutalist wonder made of reinforced concrete. The interior also has s...  more »
  • I think it should go in the direction is the same as going to the Boyana Church. Ticket office building at the gate but in the purchase ticket. The Interior is very gorgeous, and shooting is also possible. Exhibition of costumes, so thoroughly enjoy.

  • Fairly poor national history museum, there is no logical story of Bulgarian history, just a few disjointed exhibits. There is very little writing to explain the importance of the displays. The displays are reasonably interesting, just not presented well. The museum location is also a huge pain being so far out of the city and not well serviced by public transport. It was a real shame. Save yourself 10 lev and do the free walking tour. Free wifi is a plus.
  • Been there twice. While there are lots of exhibits worth seeing, the info about them is oftentimes rather poor. Overall, the navigation between the halls is confusing even for people with some knowledge of BG history. The majority of the staff is unfriendly and some of them are visibly unmotivated (e.g., discussing loudly personal matters on the job or snapping at visitors' questions).
  • There's a reasonable overview of Sofia's history, and some of the artifacts are genuinely interesting. It's good value for students, as entry is only one leva!
  • Quite frankly, I had higher expectations for the exhibits. The building itself is arguably the better showpiece. It's still worth a visit, though.
  • It was amazing, interesting stuff about our Bulgarian history, real clothes of important people in the history, weapons, medals and a lot more to discover!
