National Historical Museum, Sofia

4.3
#2 of 20 in Museums in Sofia
Discover 8,000 years of Bulgaria's natural history at National Historical Museum. The museum features 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine art, history, and ethnography. The building looks more like a communist palace than a museum, as it is a former governmental residence. Explore a rich collection of stone columns and antique and medieval monuments in the museum's courtyard. The 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire are covered in two displays. Climb to the third floor to see the hall of traditional clothes. Most descriptions are in both Bulgarian and English. • I'm local so I have visited the museum multiple times. Make sure you see the Thracian hall – it will certainly take your breath away! The ethnographic floor is also very good with lots of exhibits to ...  more »
  • has two major reasons: the Organization and wealth of the museum itself and the building itself (and Communist architecture) beautifully situated in the mountains around sofia.

  • If you get off the boyana Church find the Museum is hard indeed to the openings in the Park are all closed but before the museum itself lying by atra part of the park itself, once you are worth it though ... the photos would be banned but nobody prevents them, great collection of Roman and 1800/1900 but the entire Museum is a place to see even if its not in the Center even this, however, can be reached by tram ...

  • The museum worth seeing. The history of the building is interesting, the collections are very rich. Nevertheless, the museum itself is a communist museum, with a nationalistic message. For instance, 4 centuries of history are almost not presented because Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire... They only show the orthodox art remains from that period (calling it resistance?) and 4 ottoman plates (with no legend attached).
  • The NHM has a great location in the outskirts of Soria and amazing few to Vitosha mountain. There is a cafe i n the inner yard. If you like a trip to the mountain there is nice road that will take you to Beli mosteve and you can have a walk to Cherni vrah or to as far in the mountain as you feel like it. There is the Panorama road that offes a suberb few to Soria (at certain places). If you follow the road long w nenough you can go to Belchn bania and relax at the pool or visit ZarMali grad very near the resort.
  • The architecture and history of the building itself is just as interesting if not more than the exhibits which are mostly mediocre, poorly explained and scattered randomly. There is an eerie, creepy (in a good way) feeling walking into this building which takes you back 50 years.
  • A must, if you are coming sight seeing to Sofia. And if you are local, chances are, you have seen it more then a couple of times!
  • Quite frankly, I had higher expectations for the exhibits. The building itself is arguably the better showpiece. It's still worth a visit, though.

Where to stay in Sofia

Set yourself up for easy and convenient access to Sofia's historical core and its most popular tourist sites by staying in an upscale hotel in the city center. While you'll find some hotels on the main boulevard, look for modern hotels off the main streets to keep costs lower. Staying outside the center in the outlying neighborhoods means you'll need to use public transportation, but the network is extensive and accommodation prices farther out are lower. For a real budget-friendly option, consider staying in a hostel; the city boasts a wide array of these, many of which include breakfast.
