National Historical Museum, Sofia

#2 of 12 in Museums in Sofia
Specialty Museum Museum
Discover 8,000 years of Bulgaria's natural history at National Historical Museum. The museum features 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine art, history, and ethnography. The building looks more like a communist palace than a museum, as it is a former governmental residence. Explore a rich collection of stone columns and antique and medieval monuments in the museum's courtyard. The 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire are covered in two displays. Climb to the third floor to see the hall of traditional clothes. Most descriptions are in both Bulgarian and English. • Last Monday of the month the entrance is free. Former presidental palace - impressive architecture. We wandered around for more than an hour and admired the gold and silver thracian goblets, folk art,...  more »
  • do not rely on apparent laalideur of the building... This one houses superb collections and offers a history lesson full of Bulgaria and its rich history

  • The Museum is located outside of the Centre of the capital. Is the way (if you arrive by car) is more or less well sign-posted. The building (former residence of Communist-era) is gignatisch. But unfortunately unkempt. Instead of also capitalize, the surfaces and fountain behind the Museum verwarlost and savaged. The rooms but above all the magnificent Kronleuter inside belonging to clean! The gold treasures of Bulgaria can not even outshine the dust. In the stairwell, it stank of smoke. The coronation was found in the toilets, namely the note, that no paper in the toilets should (!). The floors and rooms offer a quick ride through the history of Bulgaria. But on closer examination we find gaps: the seizure of power are so for example the 1st and 2nd World War, Communists and the approx. 50 years regime somehow skipped; you find yourself suddenly in the time of EU accession. A common thread in the halls is missing, you don't know in which corner the passage begins. Most explanations to the exhibits are unfortunately only in Bulgarian (lucky for me as a native speaker). What is found in English, is very scientific and complicated written. Modern, contemporary presentation might not talk. The second empire is presented mostly by giant, faded pictures on the walls. My suggestion: Visit the museums in the city centre! Apparently the time stopped in the huge House has long been...

  • Quite frankly, I had higher expectations for the exhibits. The building itself is arguably the better showpiece. It's still worth a visit, though.
  • Very rich and nicely organized museum. It will take at least a couple of hours to go through everything.
  • Very nice, has lots of collections organized by era. It's a bit tiring to go through everything in a couple of hours but on the grounds it has a lovely small cafe with a stunning view of Vitosha mountain.
  • Largest Bulgarian museum. You can often see the Golden Treasure of Panagyurishte here.
  • Amazing museum. It is a must visit place

Where to stay in Sofia

Set yourself up for easy and convenient access to Sofia's historical core and its most popular tourist sites by staying in an upscale hotel in the city center. While you'll find some hotels on the main boulevard, look for modern hotels off the main streets to keep costs lower. Staying outside the center in the outlying neighborhoods means you'll need to use public transportation, but the network is extensive and accommodation prices farther out are lower. For a real budget-friendly option, consider staying in a hostel; the city boasts a wide array of these, many of which include breakfast.
