National Historical Museum, Sofia

(4.2/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Discover 8,000 years of Bulgaria's natural history at National Historical Museum. The museum features 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine art, history, and ethnography. The building looks more like a communist palace than a museum, as it is a former governmental residence. Explore a rich collection of stone columns and antique and medieval monuments in the museum's courtyard. The 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire are covered in two displays. Climb to the third floor to see the hall of traditional clothes. Most descriptions are in both Bulgarian and English. • The Museum is located just outside, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain. The Center here is's best with the tram no. 2, no. 107 or bus No. 111. The entrance fee of 10 Lewa is worthwhile in all cases. The Museum is huge and divided into 3 floors, therefore plenty of time tuning. Best start on the first floor on the left side, and by then, for floor room for room.

  • Just outside the city centre by taxi make good drive. Note OK taxi is expensive compared to other taxis. Very impressive museum, which is the entire history of Bulgaria again. A lot of precious treasures on display are

  • The Museum houses interesting artefacts, including the famous Golden treasures, but the building itself is testimony to the recent past of Bulgaria. Are among other things present traditional clothing and objects of Bulgarian folklore well illustrated by captions, over which the ethnographic museum is disappointing. One detail: in the small bar of the Museum you can drink a good cup of espresso.

  • Fairly poor national history museum, there is no logical story of Bulgarian history, just a few disjointed exhibits. There is very little writing to explain the importance of the displays. The displays are reasonably interesting, just not presented well. The museum location is also a huge pain being so far out of the city and not well serviced by public transport. It was a real shame. Save yourself 10 lev and do the free walking tour. Free wifi is a plus.
  • Been there twice. While there are lots of exhibits worth seeing, the info about them is oftentimes rather poor. Overall, the navigation between the halls is confusing even for people with some knowledge of BG history. The majority of the staff is unfriendly and some of them are visibly unmotivated (e.g., discussing loudly personal matters on the job or snapping at visitors' questions).
  • There's a reasonable overview of Sofia's history, and some of the artifacts are genuinely interesting. It's good value for students, as entry is only one leva!
  • Quite frankly, I had higher expectations for the exhibits. The building itself is arguably the better showpiece. It's still worth a visit, though.
  • It was amazing, interesting stuff about our Bulgarian history, real clothes of important people in the history, weapons, medals and a lot more to discover!
