National Art Gallery, Sofia
(3.5/5 based on 110 reviews on the web)
In the former royal palace of Bulgaria, National Art Gallery features a striking interior that serves as artwork itself in addition to the 50,000 objects it displays. Built in 1882, this chateauesque building is filled with lavish quarters, sparkling white ballrooms, and neo-Baroque adornments. A walk through the hallways reveals stone fireplaces and blood-red furniture. Take in the country's largest collection of medieval paintings, National Revival art, thousands of prominent icons, and numerous other paintings and sculptures. Look for Vladimir Dimitrov's famous portrait of a lady harvester. • The building that houses the national art gallery was originally the old Royal Palace, headquarters of the Ottoman Governor. Here the national hero Vasil Levski was interrogated and tortured before his execution in 1873. The Palace after liberation was restarauto in viennese style and became the seat of Prince Alexander of Battenberg.
