National Art Gallery, Sofia

#6 of 12 in Museums in Sofia
Art Museum Museum
In the former royal palace of Bulgaria, National Art Gallery features a striking interior that serves as artwork itself in addition to the 50,000 objects it displays. Built in 1882, this chateauesque building is filled with lavish quarters, sparkling white ballrooms, and neo-Baroque adornments. A walk through the hallways reveals stone fireplaces and blood-red furniture. Take in the country's largest collection of medieval paintings, National Revival art, thousands of prominent icons, and numerous other paintings and sculptures. Look for Vladimir Dimitrov's famous portrait of a lady harvester. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to National Art Gallery and many more Sofia attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Sofia vacation route planner.

Where to stay in Sofia

Set yourself up for easy and convenient access to Sofia's historical core and its most popular tourist sites by staying in an upscale hotel in the city center. While you'll find some hotels on the main boulevard, look for modern hotels off the main streets to keep costs lower. Staying outside the center in the outlying neighborhoods means you'll need to use public transportation, but the network is extensive and accommodation prices farther out are lower. For a real budget-friendly option, consider staying in a hostel; the city boasts a wide array of these, many of which include breakfast.
