National Art Gallery, Sofia
(3.5/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
In the former royal palace of Bulgaria, National Art Gallery features a striking interior that serves as artwork itself in addition to the 50,000 objects it displays. Built in 1882, this chateauesque building is filled with lavish quarters, sparkling white ballrooms, and neo-Baroque adornments. A walk through the hallways reveals stone fireplaces and blood-red furniture. Take in the country's largest collection of medieval paintings, National Revival art, thousands of prominent icons, and numerous other paintings and sculptures. Look for Vladimir Dimitrov's famous portrait of a lady harvester. • The Museum is very nice and big, rich in works mainly with Bulgarian painters and sculptors, the interesting thing is that it makes a digression from Impressionism to Futurism from 1850 until the 20th century. Divided into 3 floors full of works. A must see for fans of the genre! Full price costs 10 lev, lev, 5 students there require talking tessera talking libretto so if you are young, just say student! ;-) To pay just 5 lev (about 2.5 euro). You can take pictures. It is located in the Center.

  • I called my review "a Palace, two museums", since the former Royal Palace houses both the Bulgarian national art gallery and the ethnographic museum. The first offers a rundown on Bulgarian painting and the 20th century with a series of landscapers by very suggestive brush strokes; Incidentally I noticed that the biggest Bulgarian painters had relationships with the best European art schools, from St. Petersburg to Vienna, including the Accademia albertina in Turin. Worth a visit is the ethnographic museum especially for the exposition of typical Bulgarian costumes. Fans put in for a couple of hours and no mistake. Remarkable also the environments.
