Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, Sofia
(4.6/5 based on 2,400+ reviews on the web)
See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. • The most important ortodox Church that you must visit in Sofia. One of the best example of a ortodox architecture. I suggest to discover some various spots in the city with the fantastic support of the FreeSofiaTour guides; it will be a fantastic experience to know the heart of Sofia.
  • An large neo-byzantine church (not technically a cathedral) that stands imposingly at the centre of an even larger square. The inside is full of frescos which although dimmed by candle smoke, are very beautiful and picturesque. The feel of the inside is different from Western European cathedrals however it will certainly leave you in awe. Unfortunately no photos allowed on the inside!
  • This is the main symbol of Sofia. The cathedral is huge and its golden domes just magical. Night or day, this place is just breathtaking.
  • An astounding cathedral with lots to see. I recommend everyone to walk by Saint Alexander Nevsky during the night. It's an awe-inspiring sight!
  • It's the biggest cathedral (or the only one if you prefer) in Sofia. If you light a candle, gard it or it will be put in the water because the people are genuinely stupid... Don't give donation to the church or the people begging outside. The political situation in the Bulgarian Church is bad and your money WILL be spend on golden watch for someone in the temple. Or a new limousine.
