4.7/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web
See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. • Perhaps the most impressive of many historical sites to visit, posted in a very large garden park, the Cathedral looks imposing and well maintained. Definitely worth going to!

  • Great place to photograph and wander round and so close to all other attractions. It has a large square outside where the daily bus tour leaves from at 10.30 and 1 pm
  • The architectural design is one of a kind... it's perfect and I want to celebrate my birthday at the church to pray peace to mankind and I wanna make a wish and hope it will come true...
  • It's the biggest cathedral (or the only one if you prefer) in Sofia. If you light a candle, gard it or it will be put in the water because the people are genuinely stupid... Don't give donation to the church or the people begging outside. The political situation in the Bulgarian Church is bad and your money WILL be spend on golden watch for someone in the temple. Or a new limousine.
  • One of the most easily recognizable Sofia landmarks. This church has survived bombings and regimes that weren't as friendly towards religion as they should've been. It houses most beautiful murals and its architecture is absolutely marvelous! It is a must-see when visiting Sofia!
  • I've seen a lot of cathedrals. This is stunning, with a high ceiling and beautiful tile patterns on the floor. Best of Sofia, that's for sure.
  • Lovely, iconic building Good for a quick visit
