Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, Sofia

4.7
#1 of 121 in Things to do in Sofia
See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. • I saw it first time at night which is a great way of seeing it the first time because it's very well lightened and you don't see the visual 'dust' around it. It is a must see in Sofia at night. The da...  more »
  • Fascinating and charming, full of symbolism, a perfect blend of East and West. This church is among the most beautiful in Europe. If you happen to visit during a mass, stay tuned for a few minutes: on the first hand of the priest, his voice will echo in a particular way. The structure of the Church becomes the echo of the voice in a unique way, thanks to the amount of domes and architecture.

  • One of the most iconic places you can visit. It is actually a fully working church. Astonishing and breathtaking architectural achievement. It literally makes you feel humble while standing inside and staring at the ceiling. Prepare to be amazed!
  • The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral situated in Sofia is the biggest and most beautiful Orthodox cathedral in Bulgaria. With its gold-plated dome and 12 magnificently sounding bells, the cathedral is a real lendmark of the capital of Bulgaria. Inside the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is just as beautiful and can hold 10,000 people. The cathedral crypt is also worth visiting.
  • It is a magnificent cathedral, the biggest Christian Orthodox church on the Balkans. Sofia - thousand years of history, beautiful weather, super friendly people and ....absolutely delicious food! :)
  • If we could give it 10 stars or even a 100, we would. Its the landmark of Sofia - beautiful building. Hopefully the art inside will be restored one day soon.
  • It is just to attract tourists, but be careful you will be ripped off. It looks good externally but it is superficial beauty is treacherous and fake and just reflects the real nature of the whole Bulgaria.

Where to stay in Sofia

Set yourself up for easy and convenient access to Sofia's historical core and its most popular tourist sites by staying in an upscale hotel in the city center. While you'll find some hotels on the main boulevard, look for modern hotels off the main streets to keep costs lower. Staying outside the center in the outlying neighborhoods means you'll need to use public transportation, but the network is extensive and accommodation prices farther out are lower. For a real budget-friendly option, consider staying in a hostel; the city boasts a wide array of these, many of which include breakfast.
