Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, Sofia

4.6
See what may be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in Europe at Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, as well as a piece of St. Alexander Nevski's rib. The second biggest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, this church can hold 10,000 people, and its golden, neo-Byzantine domes can be seen from miles away. The cathedral's luxurious interior is decorated with Italian marble, Brazilian onyx, and alabaster. See murals, marble iconostasis, pulpit, and patriarchal throne. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II, whose army liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The various icons are inside the crypt. • Enjoyed the inside and outside of the church. We only spent 30 minutes looking around. Inside it reminded me of st Paul albeit vastly different. Good visit, no entry fee. Definitely worth a visit.  more »
  • Is a little symbol from showcase, has its charms but are preferable other Chapels dotted around the city, although now suffocated from the palaces.

  • Very beautifull gold church, built at the beginning of the new Third state. There are many tourists there all the time.  more »

  • Religious or not this is a must see if you are in town. The exterior of the cathedral is absolutely breathtaking. The scale is impressive. Once inside the attention to detail on the everything is admirable. The cathedral is the meeting point for many events in Sofia. It is in the heart of the city, so getting here is easy. There are many other sites to see within a few blocks and there are many many places to have a drink or food.
  • Beautiful exterior and interior. In low season it was very quite inside so could really enjoy it. Nice central location as well
  • This church has really ethnic and historic feel indoors.. if you are anywhere nearby this church.. you must visit. Great architecture.
  • When you're in Sofia, you start to feel the influence of the Middle East. It really seems to have its own look and feel. This church, I think, is a good example of that. It's not what you'd expect of a Western European cathedral, and it's not like a mosque. It's Bulgarian and unique. Very interesting architecture.
  • For all its boasts of a grandiose cathedral, the interior is pretty small... I've seen bigger! Crowds were pretty intense. Huge lines to get up close amd personal with the icons. They also supposedly charge a photography fee but it wasnt exactly enforced. Nice stained glass and cool exterior structure. Based on all the reviews, i was expecting more religious art but it seemed pretty void of that inside.
