Cathedral Church Sveta Nedelya, Sofia
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
In 1925, Bulgarian communists arranged an assassination attempt on Tsar Boris III and bombed Cathedral Church Sveta Nedelya, killing 150 people and destroying most of the church. A plaque outside commemorates the event. When you enter, note the well-preserved, 19th-century wood-carved iconostasis. The light from the windows of the central dome falls on the church's gold-and-blue murals. The name of the church translates to Holy (or Saint) Sunday, though it originally may have referred to the young martyr St. Kyriaki or even to Jesus Christ. The church is very popular for traditional Sunday weddings. You can light a candle here and pray if you choose. • The most beautiful church to visit in Sofia. Very beautiful frescoes and icons worth the visit

  • The Sveta Nedelya Cathedral is the seat of the Bishops of Sofia and is continuously filled with faithful placing candles and praying with sacred icons. Nearly destroyed by a terrorist attack perpetrated by the Communists in 1925, is now completely restored and decorated with precious frescoes. It is located at the end of boulevard Vitosha.

  • Situated in a prime central location, outstanding for its unmistakable external forms and inside to be frescoed. We visited twice to better admire the frescoes, and the second time we were fortunate enough to attend a part of the celebration of a marriage according to the complex, long and evocative Rite Christian-Orthodox. Inside something amiss and at one point I asked myself: Church or mosque? Because the chandelier and the twilight reveal some Oriental influence, and the same applies to external geometry.

  • St Sunday Church "Crkva Svete Nedelje" has unique architecture. This is definitely a must to visit for anyone who is visiting Sofia. Especially for Serbians, since Serbian king Milutin was buried here. Relics of the St.King Milutin are still there.
