Banya Bashi Mosque, Sofia
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Fine calligraphy citing texts from the Koran decorates the interior of Banya Bashi Mosque. The great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also built the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, designed this building in 1576. It is the only remaining example of a domed roof on a cubic base in Bulgaria. Examine the aquamarine tiles covering the eastern wall, and look for a large tile with an image of the Kaaba, the most sacred place for Muslims. The building lies next to natural thermal spas, and steam rises from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times. Take your shoes off when you enter. A person says that in the reviews "Why is this even there?!?" I condemn him/her. We keep alive the churches in Turkey. We don't damage them. In Turkey, there are a lot of churches and most of them are open. I request him/her to be more respectful and tolerant.
Alhamdulillah we are muslims ,and Elhamdülillah we can find mosques at everywhere ,and the world is a big masjid for us . Thanks Ottoman empire because they did many things for Islam. But unfortunately we the people who live at akhiir zaman has forgot our religion. May Allah make us awake.
The mosque is beautiful but I spent quite a while trying to figure out whether women were allowed inside. Regardless of that, it was astounding and definitely worth a visit!

Very nice mosque in the city center! It is amazing how in one area of the city you can find a mosque, church and synagogue - love that mix and spirit of Sofia!
