Banya Bashi Mosque, Sofia

Religious Site
Fine calligraphy citing texts from the Koran decorates the interior of Banya Bashi Mosque. The great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also built the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, designed this building in 1576. It is the only remaining example of a domed roof on a cubic base in Bulgaria. Examine the aquamarine tiles covering the eastern wall, and look for a large tile with an image of the Kaaba, the most sacred place for Muslims. The building lies next to natural thermal spas, and steam rises from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times. Take your shoes off when you enter. • These days Sofia is a city more known for its multi-domed Orthodox churches than its Islamic architectural heritage, but the city does boast one Ottoman-era structure that you should not miss: the Ban...  more »
  • Located just opposite the central market. It has the peculiar exterior view of all the mosques. Inside it can be accessed for free. They only ask that you go without shoes. The interior is nice although quite austere. Highlights of the carpets that cover all the ground to facilitate prayer. Worthy of visit.

  • The mosque is small but very cozy, is located across the street from the Museum of history. Remember to cover your head (women) and take your shoes off

  • A person says that in the reviews "Why is this even there?!?" I condemn him/her. We keep alive the churches in Turkey. We don't damage them. In Turkey, there are a lot of churches and most of them are open. I request him/her to be more respectful and tolerant.
  • A historic mosque near the city centre. It's located near an archeological site that has been preserved and opened up to the public.
  • Very nice mosque in the city center! It is amazing how in one area of the city you can find a mosque, church and synagogue - love that mix and spirit of Sofia!
  • Thank Allah we can pray for Allah when I come to Sofia I always go and pray there,it is in the centre of Sofia ruhuna el fatiha to Architect Sinan, thanks Architect Sinan and Kanuni Sultan Süleyman.
  • The mosque is beautiful but I spent quite a while trying to figure out whether women were allowed inside. Regardless of that, it was astounding and definitely worth a visit!
