Banya Bashi Mosque, Sofia
(2.8/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Fine calligraphy citing texts from the Koran decorates the interior of Banya Bashi Mosque. The great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also built the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, designed this building in 1576. It is the only remaining example of a domed roof on a cubic base in Bulgaria. Examine the aquamarine tiles covering the eastern wall, and look for a large tile with an image of the Kaaba, the most sacred place for Muslims. The building lies next to natural thermal spas, and steam rises from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times. Take your shoes off when you enter. • Would have been good to get inside- which is allowed-but not when we were in the area. Mosque, Catholic Church, Synagogue co-exist happily in Sofia.
  • walking among the ruins of Serdika you get to Flies Banya Bashi, the only one of the 70 extant Sofia to be remained. It was designed in 1576 by the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also made the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

  • Untimely visit, its minaret and main mosque is undergoing renovation when we visited Sofia. Standing still above the ruins of the ancient city of Serdika and sitting side by side with the Synagogue, O...  more »

  • A person says that in the reviews "Why is this even there?!?" I condemn him/her. We keep alive the churches in Turkey. We don't damage them. In Turkey, there are a lot of churches and most of them are open. I request him/her to be more respectful and tolerant.
  • A historic mosque near the city centre. It's located near an archeological site that has been preserved and opened up to the public.
  • Very nice mosque in the city center! It is amazing how in one area of the city you can find a mosque, church and synagogue - love that mix and spirit of Sofia!
  • Thank Allah we can pray for Allah when I come to Sofia I always go and pray there,it is in the centre of Sofia ruhuna el fatiha to Architect Sinan, thanks Architect Sinan and Kanuni Sultan Süleyman.
  • The mosque is beautiful but I spent quite a while trying to figure out whether women were allowed inside. Regardless of that, it was astounding and definitely worth a visit!
