To honor Bulgaria's liberation from the Ottoman rule, Russian architects created Shipchenski monastery (St Nikolay), considered by some to be the finest-looking structure in the country. Featuring gilded onion-shaped domes and colorful mosaics, the church is a masterpiece of Russian 17th-century architecture. Standing 53 m (174 ft) tall, it rises above trees and rooftops, and its 17 bells can be heard from miles away. Step inside and see the vibrant decoration and frescoes, and observe mosaics with the names of nearly 18,500 soldiers who lost their lives during the Liberation War of 1877-1878. The shops around sell some really cool stuff, the SOAP, hand cream and body lotion are lower than in the Centre of Sofia. (I paid 11 liv). Church supply store, also had a lot of cool stuff!
