4.4/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web
Bachkovo Monastery is home to a silver-encased icon of the Virgin allegedly painted by St. Luke. Learn about the monastery's history from the frescoes in the former refectory, and view a marble table from 1601 in the dining room. Two churches in the monastery's courtyard feature 19th-century wall paintings by the prominent Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. Enter the chapel to see a depiction of the Last Judgment; seek out the agitated Turks on the right and Zograf's self-portrait in the left corner. Other highlights include the 17th-century iconostasis, church plates, covers of manuscripts, and other pieces of applied art. The ossuary, a two-story stone tomb, is the only building preserved from the original monastery. To visit Bachkovo Monastery and other attractions in Plovdiv, use our Plovdiv vacation generator.

  • During his trip to Bulgaria neskol′kodnevnoj we have planned a visit to bachkovo monastery-from beautiful, the second largest in Bulgaria, etc. etc. We made a crucial mistake of going there 28 August-so just happened along the route, no one planned this day be there. That, as it turned out, was a significant miscalculation about the reasons which I will write below. So, early in the morning we departed from Asenovgrad and went along very well just very beautiful prigornaâ road to the monastery with beautiful views, current near the River, mountain and Avsenovu fortress, on which we also climbed (but this will be another review) Arriving to the monastery experienced some culture shock-the crowd of Gypsies who eat, sleep, walk-living here in tents , cars and just floormats. The first reaction was a genuine misunderstanding-what is happening?! In the monastery of privechayut Roma-a local feature or refugees here or what? As we found out later, heavily-everything was easy. It turns out Gypsies just live on my old calendar approved by the ancestors of the damn tee how many years ago. and the fact that in Bulgaria the assumption August 15-not the Decree. on their calendar-28 August and Basta. The effect was substantially oiled, though kind would be Gypsies and behave decently, but they were very much. With regard to the monastery-Yes, it is located in an excellent location with wonderful views, but ... the feeling that service there lead "for show"-služki stood Aby as, civil, incorporated and shut down of singing in a random order. A monk can notice the secluded to the wall and qualitatively groin fume. On site keep lamb-easy is right by the entrance to the monastery by smell years 10 nečiŝennogo stall. On the territory of the monastery on the upper floors are perfectly combined drying underwear and a satellite dish. Very disappointing to see how really spiritual place transformed into THIS! Maybe we just unlucky with the date opezdki, but go after Rila Monastery ètogov I did not dare not to kill felt the Bulgarian faith finally. P.s. a small photo report in annex

  • Must popular monastery around Plovdiv. Must see it in the spring our during the autumn
  • Highly recommended!!! Visit also Asenovgrad's historical museum. Unbelievable. 6500 B.C. exposition.
  • This place is really beautiful, a hidden gem. The setting of the town from which you walk up from (if getting the regular bus) is really mysterious and rural. When I went a baptism was being carried out in the church and I didn't want to intrude so never got to see that part. But there was another church to it, and I still got to hear a baptism being carried out in Bulgarian. I'd definitely recommended a trip here!
  • Lovely nature, lots of bulgarian history and culture! Love that place!
