Bachkovo Monastery, Plovdiv
(4.4/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Bachkovo Monastery is home to a silver-encased icon of the Virgin allegedly painted by St. Luke. Learn about the monastery's history from the frescoes in the former refectory, and view a marble table from 1601 in the dining room. Two churches in the monastery's courtyard feature 19th-century wall paintings by the prominent Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. Enter the chapel to see a depiction of the Last Judgment; seek out the agitated Turks on the right and Zograf's self-portrait in the left corner. Other highlights include the 17th-century iconostasis, church plates, covers of manuscripts, and other pieces of applied art. The ossuary, a two-story stone tomb, is the only building preserved from the original monastery. To visit Bachkovo Monastery and other attractions in Plovdiv, use our Plovdiv vacation generator.

  • The stay was brief but vivid impressions. The place is popular, breathtaking landscapes. At first glance, the masterpiece of the monastery will not name, perhaps a result of the Georgian brevity. But the atmosphere it is divine. The shrine is an ancient monastery, the miraculous icon of the Theotokos "Tenderness", dating back to the 14th century. From it really blows warmth. Hence the overall impression. Trees in several old buildings and girth are supporting a sense of centuries. Of course, from this perspective, trade on the rise alley to the monastery of violating the harmony, but gives the food literally and replete with souvenirs. People with disabilities to the monastery can be accessed in transport (entrance charge). But in the monastery to move stone slabs hard-need is taken into account.

  • Its very nice and sacred place, I recommend to everyone to visit.
  • Highly recommended!!! Visit also Asenovgrad's historical museum. Unbelievable. 6500 B.C. exposition.
  • This place is really beautiful, a hidden gem. The setting of the town from which you walk up from (if getting the regular bus) is really mysterious and rural. When I went a baptism was being carried out in the church and I didn't want to intrude so never got to see that part. But there was another church to it, and I still got to hear a baptism being carried out in Bulgarian. I'd definitely recommended a trip here!
