Assen's Fortress, Plovdiv

4.6
#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Plovdiv
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. • Plovdivból is a modern train went out Asenovgradba, which is a pretty good little town. From there on foot approached the Fort, 4-5 km on foot. The location of the place is fascinating, yet difficult to approach, specifically for pleasant, lovely.

  • Asen’s Fortress is an old fort ruin about 4 kilometres from Asenovgrad near Plovdiv. It is easy to walk to the Fortress from the train station, though the last two kilometres are uphill. There is not ...  more »

  • It is one of very few places which are kept from the early middle ages. The place offers incredible view! The place offers also tourist service. Very good to bring the kids. You can leave the car down and take a breath taken walk to the citadel. It is not huge but very strategic during that time.
  • A fabulous place to visit. The fortress itself is mostly ruble (it was destroyed by the Ottomans in the 14th century) but the church still stands. The fortress is set on top of a peak in a lovely mountainous area. You can really get a feel for what it was like to defend the mountain passages.
  • Very special place. Arrive before 18:00 as it will be closed. Very well lit at dark.
  • Asen's Fortress (Bulgarian: Асенова крепост, Asenova krepost), identified by some researchers as Petrich (Петрич), is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains, 2 to 3 kilometres (1.2 to 1.9 mi) south of the town of Asenovgrad, on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. Asen's Fortress is 279 metres (915 ft) above sea level.
  • Great climb via essentially a series of flights of stairs leads up to the Fortress. There is one building to explore before heading to the top. Stunning panoramas of the surrounding valley makes this a must visit. You may want to be aware of the temperature before you head up. On a normal day it would be quite straightforward forward but in 30 plus degree heat there was a lot of red faces at the top.
