4.5/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. • Very nicely located a small fortress. In fact, the only intact Church, the rest of the ruins. But everywhere you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and the road.

  • Great historical place! Breathtaking view of the valley. The church is very well preserved for almost 10 centuries. Do not miss the stone inscription above the entrance of the complex!
  • Beautiful place. There is a great view from the top. The entrance is cheap and it is totally worth visiting
  • Astounding place, a memory of a great past and immersive environment as a whole.
  • Breathtaking view and amazing fortress.
  • Astounding views in every direction. It is very well preserved (outside of all the modifications they have made for tourist safety). A piece of history definitely worth visiting
