Assen's Fortress, Plovdiv

4.6
#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Plovdiv
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. • We drove from Plovdiv to this, we loved the mountains and the history. No tourist hordes, fabulous! The view was amazing. Bulgaria is stunning.  more »
  • Beautiful spot, with an amazing view however it is a bit difficult to visit without a car so its not for every traveler.  more »
  • On the way to the Baškův Monastery, offers a visit to the fortress. It is a bit difficult and inappropriate for people with restrictions of movement. Climb the stairs of uneven stone, but amazing fascinating view of the Valley, when you think about, when a Fort was built.

  • Great climb via essentially a series of flights of stairs leads up to the Fortress. There is one building to explore before heading to the top. Stunning panoramas of the surrounding valley makes this a must visit. You may want to be aware of the temperature before you head up. On a normal day it would be quite straightforward forward but in 30 plus degree heat there was a lot of red faces at the top.
  • Beautiful walk. Amazing views. Totally worth visiting even if you have to drive from another part of Bulgaria. We made a one day trip out of this place. Mind that there's 1.5 leva parking fee, and 4 leva entrance (normal).
  • Amazing view over the town and the surrounding mountains. It is a good choice for a walk and family trip
  • Watch the parking fee, as there is no real parking place. The building itself is really atmospheric and the view is stunning
  • Beautiful place. Recommend the chapl st.Atanasii.
