Assen's Fortress, Plovdiv
(4.5/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. • I stopped here between a visit to Plovdiv and the Bachkovo Monastary. So glad I did! The views are spectacular, though there are a lot of stairs to take up to the top. Most of the fortress is actually...  more »
  • Very nice but little remains of the Castle, only the Church. All if it goes through the area, your visit is advisable since it doesn't take long

  • If you come here on foot, be aware that climbs hard, but in the end the ride is worth the trip. The road that leads to this fortress is borrowed quite a few and so it is a pleasant walk. The chapel lying there can be visited and is really nice and the view of the mountains and the Valley is impressive. To do!

  • Great historical place! Breathtaking view of the valley. The church is very well preserved for almost 10 centuries. Do not miss the stone inscription above the entrance of the complex!
  • Very beautiful place with a great view! Does not matter the weather, you are gonna love it!
  • One of the must see landmarks if you are passing by. The entrance fee is ~1 euro. Try to walk instead of driving it has great views along the way once you get off the main road.
  • This is a great place to visit, and learn more about Bulgarian history and culture.
  • Beautiful place. There is a great view from the top. The entrance is cheap and it is totally worth visiting
