Assen's Fortress, Plovdiv

4.6
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Plovdiv
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. On the way to the Baškův Monastery, offers a visit to the fortress. It is a bit difficult and inappropriate for people with restrictions of movement. Climb the stairs of uneven stone, but amazing fascinating view of the Valley, when you think about, when a Fort was built.

Easily accessible with car or by foot. We went there with car. A beautiful place with great history. Next time we will go by foot from the City. It is a few kilometres walk but through a nice path and the view from the top of the fortress is priceless.

Even if it was 2 km from the town and you have to go up in the hill (by car is faster), it was worth it! The mountain scenery is breath taking, the church is in quite good condition (compered to other fortresses) and the view from top of fortress is amazing!

Perfect place for a walk but check the opening hours first since it might be closed

Asen’s Fortress is the most interesting and most often visited tourist attraction in the Asenovgrad region. It is located three kilometers from the city on the top of a cliff, on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. There is a scenic route to the fortress branching off the road just south of Asenovgrad heading toward Smolyan.

Good views and a nice little chapel, but the fortress ruins are a bit underwhelming
