St Stephens Church, Nessebar

4.8
#3 of 14 in Historic Sites in Burgas Province
Architectural Building Religious Site
Walk through centuries of artistic and religious history at St Stephens Church, a World Heritage Site on the coast of the Black Sea. The eastern (and oldest) part of the small three-nave basilica dates from the 11th century, while murals of over 1,000 New Testament figures were added in the 16th and 18th centuries. Later, organizations and the government renovated the church in order to preserve its iconography, carved bishop's throne, and a pulpit. Take time to study the well-preserved interior frescoes, rare examples of wall art of central Europe. • Beautifully restored wall paintings, icons and works of art, really uplifting experience. In addition it may be the entrance because there is no weight here, feel free to enjoy the atmosphere of the Church ...

  • Very beautiful church, well maintained, a haven of peace at the time of the visit, beautiful paintings, must see with the combined pass.

  • The abundance of paintings is staggering, from floor to ceiling, painted everything! Greek art church painting always strikes exactly humanity images that reflected in masterpieces of this church. Strikes another Church outside is not very visible, and low (relatively) the height of the Dome allows you to look at his paintings. This room does not want to leave, I want to see and watch the clock. Best buy combined ticket by visiting the archaeological museum-goes a bit cheaper.

  • Very beautiful.
  • There were two interesting columns with some sharp iron spikes at the top of them. For candles maybe?
  • One of the main sights of the Old Neceber city. Well preserved architecture of the church and beautiful even at night

Where to stay in Nessebar

Though much of the accommodations in the immediate region are concentrated in larger, nearby seaside cities, Nessebar itself features some affordable options. The city lacks many international chains, but this means you can find affordable places to stay more or less anywhere in town. Grab a spot in one of the many locally run guesthouses scattered around the modern part of the city (just inland from the historical peninsula section but within easy walking distance). To be even closer to the World Heritage Site of the ancient city, consider staying in a guesthouse or bed and breakfast out on the peninsula right among the historical buildings.
