The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a vaulted-brickwork "beehive" tomb near the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria. The tomb is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It comprises a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing a Thracian couple at a ritual funeral feast. The monument dates back to the 4th century BCE and has been on the UNESCO protected World Heritage Site list since 1979. The murals are memorable for the splendid horses and for a gesture of farewell, in which the seated couple grasp each other's wrists in a moment of tenderness and equality . The paintings are Bulgaria's best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period. The tomb is situated near the ancient Thracian capital of Seuthopolis in a region where more than a thousand tombs of kings and members of the Thracian aristocracy can be found. To preserve the sensitive paintings, the tomb is not open to the public; a full-size replica was built nearby. The seated woman of the murals is depicted on the reverse of the Bulgarian 50 stotinki coin issued in 2005.

  • As many reviewers have already written this tomb is a replica of the original a few meters. However, this does not affect the interest in visiting it, because it is a copy practically identical to the original. If there is nearby is a pity not to visit it, but we took a detour from our original location approximately two hours to go see her and probably is a bit over the top. The Tomb are not well signposted on the road, then I highly recommend the use of a browser. Overall though the visit was interesting, better avoid it though if you suffer from claustrophobia since the grave is really small (3-4 square meters)

  • Can't believe the rating for this. It might be unesco but there is very little there. The actual tomb is hidden in a building behind secure gates. The copy tomb is smaller than a car. Very smelly when...  more »
  • Very nice of the Tomb, not far from the original. Magnificent frescoes to be seen but the site is really small. To do if one is crossing in the corner.

  • You see replica but is very well done. Historical fact some of objects from the 4th century. The original is preserved under new building near by.
  • What you get to see is a replica, but it appears to have been faithfully done, and captures the feel of the original. Excellent place to see Thracian building and art.
  • The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a unique tomb dating back to the 4th century BCE! It is really amazing and totally worth a visit.
  • Although you can't see the actual tomb but it's replica, this place is totally worth the visit. It actually helps you put things into perspective and undertstand that ancient Thracians were quite more developed as a socity than we, modern people, think. Plus, it's beautiful!
  • In theory this should be a mind blowing experience, but in practice it's very underwhelming. Thracian history in the region of modern day Bulgaria and Greece is really more interesting than you'd know from visiting this tiny tomb. Do yourself a favor and go read about the history of Thrace, but don't go out of your way to see this tomb.
