Thracian Tomb , Kazanlak
(3.1/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a vaulted-brickwork "beehive" tomb near the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria. The tomb is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It comprises a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing a Thracian couple at a ritual funeral feast. The monument dates back to the 4th century BCE and has been on the UNESCO protected World Heritage Site list since 1979. The murals are memorable for the splendid horses and for a gesture of farewell, in which the seated couple grasp each other's wrists in a moment of tenderness and equality . The paintings are Bulgaria's best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period. The tomb is situated near the ancient Thracian capital of Seuthopolis in a region where more than a thousand tombs of kings and members of the Thracian aristocracy can be found. To preserve the sensitive paintings, the tomb is not open to the public; a full-size replica was built nearby. The seated woman of the murals is depicted on the reverse of the Bulgarian 50 stotinki coin issued in 2005.

  • The tomb was accidentally found in 1944 in the North-Eastern region of Kazanlak, and this is an important monument of Thracian art from the early Hellenistic era. The monument owes its worldwide reputation in the remarkable frescoes in the hallway and assuming a dome-one of the best preserved products of ancient paintings from the early Hellenistic era. The unknown painter had worked in four basic colours: black, red, yellow and white. Worth the visit!

  • Worth the visit. With its history, squeezing through the tight passageway of the tomb gives one a feel of the ancient rituals and practices.
  • It takes visiterc' is something rare and the place reveals a piece of often unknown history. Very well preserved, explanation a bit diffuse, we'd like to have a bit more... not very long visit, not much to see, but to see the interest.

  • In Kazanluk museums takes extra money for takeing photographs. In Varna, Burgas, Nessebar, Pomorie I didn't experienced that. Though prices are ridiculously low.
  • In theory this should be a mind blowing experience, but in practice it's very underwhelming. Thracian history in the region of modern day Bulgaria and Greece is really more interesting than you'd know from visiting this tiny tomb. Do yourself a favor and go read about the history of Thrace, but don't go out of your way to see this tomb.
  • I was privileged to visit it when there was no electricity so I was on a privite tour with a tourch. The guide was amazing and extra informative.
  • If you visit Kazanlak, just go and see this place. One of the symbols of the town
  • The original site is closed to visitors and a copy is at next door, but not worth of visiting if you drive a long way from sofia
