Perperikon, Kardzhali Province

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Kardzhali Province
The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon (also Perpericon; Перперикон, Περπερικον) is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of the present-day town of Kardzhali, Bulgaria, on a 470 m high rocky hill, which is thought to have been a sacred place. The village of Gorna Krepost ("Upper Fortress") is located at the foot of the hill and the gold-bearing Perpereshka River flows near it. Perperikon is the largest megalith ensemble in the Balkans. It is thought that the famous Temple of Dionysius is located at this location. A visitor centre is being constructed at a cost of 2.4 million Euros funded by the EU.HistoryBulgarian archaeologist Nikolay Ovcharov started the excavation works at Perperikon in 2000, and revealed the remains of ancient architectural complex.Human activity in the area dates back to 5000 B.C. The first traces of civilization on the hill date from the Bronze Age, while the ceramics found on the place date from the Early Iron Age, as well as the impressive round altar, almost 2 m in diameter, hewn out of the rocks. At Perperikon, a twelve days' journey from the sea, Medokos called himself king of Thrace after Sitalces's death in 424 BC, but failed to hold a throne.Archaeologists have uncovered a giant multi-story palace and an imposing fortress built around the hill, with walls as thick as 2.8 m. These date from the time of the Roman Empire. Temples and residential quarters were also constructed in the fortress. The megalithic complex has been laid in ruins and re-erected many times throughout history.

  • Maybe we should have bought a guide. As it was now, it was only imagination to understand what we were looking at. Actually the ruins itself are quite good and I probably would have given 4 stars if t...  more »

  • Dated 5-7 000 years ago Perperikon is one of the ancient places throughout Europe, where we just see and adore without knowing exactly what was the purpose of the constructions made. it cannot be comp...  more »
  • Amazing place! Exquisite views with such historic relevance. Must see if you're staying near by. For people complaining about the lack of signs. You can easily read up yourself, but even if not the views and the fact that people were able to make these structures so long ago is fascinating.
  • Dissapointed because of the lack of signs and descriptions. Even if u buy a map u need a lot of imagination to find out what u see. In my opinion, instead of spending the EU money for the fancy path they should have built a decent WC.
  • The place is wonderful for people who like archeology and ancient culture. But there are no maps or any signs to show you what are you seeing, and if you are not aware of the history of the place you won't be able to understand the ancient ruins. The price is not worth, because there is no free toilet or places for rest. The parking is paid as well. There is one water spring, but is situated at the beginning of the tour, so you should bring bottles and hats. I wouldn't go back there in the summer. There is the smallest vegetable garden in the world, as you can see from the photos :)
  • Truly spectacular ancient Thracian site. On a par with, if not better than, Mycenae in Greece. The 360 degrees view at the top is stunning. You need a car to get there. In the summer, go late afternoon to avoid the heat. Souvenir shops at the entrance sell water and hats.
  • Absolutely worth to visit it. Nice view from th. buy a map at the parking place,it's helpful.
