#6 of 11 in Things to do in Gabrovo Province
The Bacho Kiro cave is situated 5km west of the town Dryanovo, Bulgaria, only 300m away from the Dryanovo Monastery. It is embedded in the canyons of the Andaka and Dryanovo River. It was opened in 1890 and the first recreational visitors entered the cave in 1938, two years before it was renamed in honor of Bulgarian National Revival leader, teacher and revolutionary Bacho Kiro. The cave is a four-storey labyrinth of galleries and corridors with a total length of 3600m, 700m of which are maintained for public access and equipped with electrical lights since 1964. An underground river has over time carved out the many galleries that contain countless stalactone, stalactite, and stalagmite speleothem formations of great beauty. Galleries and caverns of a 1200m long section have been musingly named as a popular description of this fairy-tale underground world. The formations succession: Bacho Kiro’s Throne, The Dwarfs, The Sleeping Princess, The Throne Hall, The Reception Hall, The Haidouti Meeting-Ground, The Fountain and the Sacrificial Altar. The site has yielded the oldest human remains ever to be found in Bulgaria. Among one of the earliest known Aurignacian burials (layer 11), two pierced animal teeth were found and ordered into the distinct Bachokiran artifact assemblage. Radiocarbon dated to over 43,000 years ago, they currently represent the oldest known ornaments in Europe. With an approximate age of 46,000 years, human fossils consist of a pair of fragmented mandibles. Whether these early humans were in fact Homo sapiens or Neanderthals is still disputed.

  • The picturesque cave has 300m long equipped with light and short exposition. It makes sense to visit together with Dryanovo monastery. From the cave you can climb to the terrace with panoramic views o...  more »
  • The heat is at its peak summer days we discovered that in one of the cave and around. The cave is located near a beautiful nature. Part of the car park area and intense days, parking is limited. It first opened to the public in eighty years ago Bulgaria cave. Still not much impress in; especially when I have visited at least one cave before those who can see nothing new. The ability to have two kinds of tour: guided tour of the cave can be visited without a guide, long short Cave Tour. We do not recommend the short tour. Short round, mud, algae flourished in the placement of the stones, coins and wishes that are thrown tepenizden encounters with ordinary things, such as dripping, you won't see much notable. Stalactites and stalagmites can be seen in the long round, however. If you are not a big group, you will create a group so that the visitor can join the long wait and the tour. Even on hot days, the inside of the cave is cool and moist and must maintain a thin coat Hibernate; especially for children. Six flat, slick shoes wet in some places with cave backdrop music because it creates the risk of a fall and muddy. As a result, be done with hot spot, diffuse with stones. Definitely at peace with nature, cold, sensor lighting systems must be folded. For people who have visited this cave and interest also can be a pleasant time, depending on the opportunity, but we do not think the visit does not lose much. Gabrovo district is so much better here, especially outdoors, worth exploring natural areas.

  • Visited this cave are absolutely accidental. Rode in the dryanovo monastery and saw a pointer to the cave. Decided to go take a look. Not disappointed. The cave is along the River with a waterfall, a forest and cliffs. It's beautiful. The entrance to the cave is charged, but not expensive. In my on 3 Leva per adult person. If you plan to visit the cave take warm clothes. Summer temperature there was +4 degrees, that the differential in the street + 33 very noticeable. The cave is interesting for its passages in the cliffs, stalactites. The path highlighted, there are also lights ceiling cave. Walking it is necessary cautiously, slippery from dripping water, especially on descents and climbs. You can make a good photo, if technology allows. In the dark cave. There is information on a Board at the entrance of this cave. The second time would not go. Once you can.

  • The 30 minutes tour its actually a 10 minutes. Still its a nice cave to visit. The human stupidity its present here also at the end of the cave all the walls and floor its full of coins. So take a bag to collect some... :)
  • Very interesting place where were found the oldest remains of human beings in Europe from about 43000 years B.C.
  • Easy to access, nice for kids. Could not take long tour unfortunately.
  • One of the most mesmerizing caves in Bulgaria! Take the longer road - it is amazing. The short one is not so cool and there is a lot of mud.
  • Beautiful location, well worth a visit
