St. Anastasia Island (остров св. Анастасия, ostrov Sv. Anastasiya, formerly called Bolshevik Island, остров Болшевик) is a Bulgarian islet in the Black Sea. It is located 1.5 km off the coast near Chernomorets, at 12 metres above sea level, and covers a territory of one hectare. It is the only inhabited island off the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. The island is supplied with electricity and drinking water. It is named after the former St. Anastasia convent located on it. The convent had existed since the Middle Ages and was reconstructed during the 18th-19th century. It has been abandoned since 1923, when the island was transformed into a prison. In 1925, a group of 43 political prisoners (communists and anti-fascists), led by Teohar Bakardzhiev, revolted and escaped from the island, subsequently fleeing to the Soviet Union. In their honor, the island was renamed Bolshevik Island when the communists came into power in 1945. Bulgarian film director Rangel Valchanov based his 1958 film On The Small Island ("На малкия остров") on this event.A Bulgarian Burgas-based weekly newspaper, Factor, reported in 2006 that the Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader, Ahmed Dogan, visited the island and expressed desire to privatize it. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, however, which claims the island is its property, would hear none of this.

  • KB. a 20-minute boat ride from ancient town. A very small island, but it's worth a visit and enjoy a lunch/coffee.

  • About half an hour to get to the island by boat, it is approximately 6.5 kilometers. A scrap of land formed by the eruption of the small area, enveloped in legends course about pirates and buried treasure somewhere. See especially here nothing (little church, the Lighthouse Museum, and several historical sites), but admittedly a very picturesque place.

  • Just the right little island to walk around. Restaurant and coffee shop. Good toilets. Very interesting little museum.

  • Very beautiful place,it might be small, but it's worth to be seen! The restaurant has a typical menu, the church is authentic and the views are stunning! They have the little cafeteria/there is a typical name, not café/ authentic as in the past. Plus there is the lovly boat trip until you get there! Something worth seeing!
  • Amazing place! 😍
  • The island can be reached by boat from Bourgas. The trip is at certain times and in the city there are not enough signs, directions to the place of departure. The island is small with a hotel part, restaurant and Museum. You can get a certificate for the Islander. My visit, but I had high expectations.
