Historic Walking Area
For generations, Romans, Bulgarians, and Ottomans controlled this area from Belogradchik Fortress. The Romans constructed the fortress between the first and third centuries CE. Notice the openings for guns and the three bastions for cannons on the fortress walls. Climb to the highest point of the fortress, called the first slab, for a view of the 70 m (230 ft) high rocks on the other side of the yard. The site also features a monument dedicated to the leaders of the uprising against Ottoman rule, who were taken away through one of the fortress tunnels and beheaded. • To start with it is a long and fairly hard climb to the top of the fortress but it is absolutely worth the effort. Only 3 of our group of over 25 made the entire climb. Some of the climb is up steep s...  more »

  • This area of Bulgaria is generally not be visited. It is still cheaper that penalty is elsewhere in the country, and the fortress. We got early, right at the open (levs 6 - 9 am). As in the rest of the places visited, we were alone. It is true that I expected one greater strength. There is a viewpoint outside the Fort up a little more above where the car is left. Fantastic views. There is a route on foot from 14 km between rocks, but we did not have time

  • Incredible place in the mountains. Totally worth it to visit.
  • Nice place to visit in the north og Bulgaria. However apart for the the fortress, there isn't much to do here so plan your day accordingly.
  • One of the best places to visit in Bulgaria.
  • Amazing historical fotress build into a breathtaking rock formation. It's roots apparently date back as early as the 13th century. Over the centuries each local ruler added their touch. Time also created a little romantic legend about love and tragedy. The fotress and the rock formations are a must see in the wider area.
  • a must see if you visit Bugaria
