Bachkovo Monastery, Bachkovo

(4.4/5 based on 280 reviews on the web)
Bachkovo Monastery is home to a silver-encased icon of the Virgin allegedly painted by St. Luke. Learn about the monastery's history from the frescoes in the former refectory, and view a marble table from 1601 in the dining room. Two churches in the monastery's courtyard feature 19th-century wall paintings by the prominent Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. Enter the chapel to see a depiction of the Last Judgment; seek out the agitated Turks on the right and Zograf's self-portrait in the left corner. Other highlights include the 17th-century iconostasis, church plates, covers of manuscripts, and other pieces of applied art. The ossuary, a two-story stone tomb, is the only building preserved from the original monastery. To visit Bachkovo Monastery and other attractions in Bachkovo, use our Bachkovo vacation generator.

  • Great place, lots of people. Wonderful frescoes and Mecca Holy for the Bulgarians. Fairly remote location need a vehicle to get there. Few toilets. Not to be missed.

  • The beautiful, historic place. There is something to see and you can touch the history. You can get to the service, you can pray and put a candle, and you can just stand and dreaming about the good. Near the monastery there are cafes and restaurants, as well as not big Bazaar. Recommend.

  • Already on the way to the monastery of heart skips a beat! Inside, all is quiet and without fuss. Lucky: could touch the miraculous icon of the Virgin! Walking through the territory of the monastery, you get tremendous satisfaction))). Recommend! Take the time to visit

  • Its very nice and sacred place, I recommend to everyone to visit.
  • I recommend beeing early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
  • Must popular monastery around Plovdiv. Must see it in the spring our during the autumn
  • Very nice spring time
  • This place is really beautiful, a hidden gem. The setting of the town from which you walk up from (if getting the regular bus) is really mysterious and rural. When I went a baptism was being carried out in the church and I didn't want to intrude so never got to see that part. But there was another church to it, and I still got to hear a baptism being carried out in Bulgarian. I'd definitely recommended a trip here!
