Bachkovo Monastery is home to a silver-encased icon of the Virgin allegedly painted by St. Luke. Learn about the monastery's history from the frescoes in the former refectory, and view a marble table from 1601 in the dining room. Two churches in the monastery's courtyard feature 19th-century wall paintings by the prominent Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. Enter the chapel to see a depiction of the Last Judgment; seek out the agitated Turks on the right and Zograf's self-portrait in the left corner. Other highlights include the 17th-century iconostasis, church plates, covers of manuscripts, and other pieces of applied art. The ossuary, a two-story stone tomb, is the only building preserved from the original monastery. Very beautiful monastery! The yard itself is really pleasant to just rest for a bit, with beautiful water fountains and 100-year old trees. Make sure to find the peacocks located in a separate enclosure out of the way. The inside of the church has been renovated recently - the ceiling is particularly impressive, with sparkling gold inlays contrasting against the dark pain of the murals and icons.
Beautiful calm place of meditation and worship. Church with lovely icons. Surroundings also beautiful. On a Tuesday in October very few visitors.
Very beautiful place, unique - worth the stop on the was and visit it! Everyone was very nice and welcoming all the visitors with lots of patience to each one of them. We loved it! Highly recommended - do not miss!
A beautiful, quaint monastery with restored frescoes and a peaceful garden, just 30-40min drive from Plovdiv. There are two parking lots, one right off the main road that goes from Plovdiv to Smolyan from where a market street with lots of souvenirs and food starts; and one right outside the monastery walls. The parking lot next to the monastery has a 2 BGN fee for non limited time. Apart from the church within the monastery walls, there's also a church museum. From the monastery parking lot starts a nice walking path that goes through nice forests and reaches a big picnic spot. Bachkovo Monastery makes for a great weekend trip.
Loved this place. Short hill to approach which is lined on both sides by souvenir shops and cafes, very friendly. You can wander around the courtyard of the monastery but if you want to go in to the little museum or through into the monastery part there is a small fee. Didn't see any of the peacocks mentioned 😔 Amazing frescoes and ceilings that are totally awe inspiring. Courtyard has shady trees and water fountains with lovely little water channels criss crossing the ground. Couldn't go into one small chapel as there was a christening on, but no sign to say. Was quite a busy place. Lots of old icons and religious artefacts on view in the museum. Really nice atmosphere and feel to the place so yes, worth a visit.
