Callwood Distillery, Tortola

3.7
#37 of 143 in Things to do in British Virgin Islands
See how rum is produced in a traditional, sustainable, and natural way at Callwood Distillery, housed within a 400-year-old stone building peeking through sugarcane bushes. Enter the dusty, dim distillery to see old bottles hanging from the walls and examine oak barrels responsible for the rum's distinct flavor and color. Taste or buy some sugarcane rum, or ask the owner to show you how this liquor is boiled and fermented in outdoor stills. This is a 400 plus year old distillery and it still does everything the old fashion way. The tour is only a couple of $ and the 4 types of rum they make called Arundell's are $1 for all 4 shots. We bo...  more »

Went to Callwoods which is a neat little stop and we enjoyed ourselves. I am not sure there rum is proofed correctly though because we put a bottle of the 10 year in our freezer and in not too long it...  more »

Very cool place! An historical distillery where rum is made in a big drum over an open fire. We bought shots for the group ($1 for 4) and took bottles home. They even have mini plastic bottles of rum ...  more »

On a recent trip to visit Tortola in the British Virgin Islands we made our way to a quiet beach with a local-vibe on the northwest side of the small island - Cane Garden Bay Beach. Just south on Route 1 from the beach is a rum distillery with big time word-of-mouth, some great history, and not much else. This may be the smallest distillery of any kind I have ever seen. It’s history dates back to the late 1800s and the facility certainly looks like it. They have been producing 1800s-style rum for over 100 years and offer tourist groups a sampling of 4 different rums for a mere $1. Naturally, most everyone visiting is a tourist and takes them up on this offer. Nice pit stop during your stay on the island, but don’t go too out of your way.

We really liked our visit to Callwood's, which is the oldest continuously running distillery on BVI. It is a nice break from the normal haunts. You do need to buy something to take pictures inside, and for a $2 sampling of all their rums, that seemed really fair. We liked the aged rum the most!

I've been drinking rum for more than 30 years... There is no rum offered in the USA that even comes close to Callwoods... If you love rums, make it a point to stop in and have a tasting, then be prepared to bring home a few bottles!! Cheers!

Simple old place, but very interesting. 400years old. Looks like a building out the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" . 4 Rum sample $1.00. Located walking distance from beach. Not much to this place but worth a quick stop.

Old distillery with outstanding resale ROM. Ancient bottles covered with dust and beautiful old banners. Stunning beach.
