Capela de Santa Luzia, Vitoria

3.9
#7 of 12 in Historic Sites in Vitoria
The city’s oldest religious structure is Capela de Santa Luzia, built in the 16th century of stone, lime, and clay tiles. This simple rectangular building is a national landmark, and has played an important role in the history of the city and the entire region. You can take a free guided tour of the chapel, or drop in on your own when you visit the city’s historic Upper Town. Visitors often remark that this building seems frozen in time, having kept almost all of its features, now several centuries old, completely intact. Don’t miss a chance for a quick stop at a timeless place, unaffected by change and impervious to the modern times. • All are visible. I think that visitation is not permitted, whereas your state of deterioration. Is the oldest church in Victory, but won't be able to resist more. You can only photograph the facade.

  • It was closed on the day we visited, so was only possible foreign visitation. It is the oldest church in the city of Vitoria. It was erected in the 16th century on a rock, in colonial style, with simple architectural traits. Built of stone and lime, oyster and covered with clay tiles, presents the same characteristics of other churches of the Holy Spirit: rectangular nave, longer and taller than the chancel. Has as a single quirk access door, with a small pediment, dating from the 18th century, next to the Bell Tower. In 1943 it was restored and worked as art gallery and Museum of sacred art. Considered a work of great historical and Cultural value, the chapel of Santa Luzia is a landmark of the beginning of the colonization of the Holy Spirit. * Guided tours and free, from Wednesday to Sunday, including holidays, from 13 to 17 hours (service currently suspended for restoration by Iphan)

  • Historic Sanctuary. One of the first churches built in the Holy Spirit. Newly restored, is worth knowing.
