Pateo do Collegio, Sao Paulo

4.2
#5 of 32 in Historic Sites in Sao Paulo
Architectural Building Historic Site
The date the city was born is the same date the Pateo do Collegio celebrated its inaugural mass. The school and church that make up the college served as the epicenter of spirit and education for about two centuries; however, the Jesuits came into conflict with other settlers, particularly the settlers using the Amerinds as slaves. The Jesuits opposed slavery and wanted to convert and educate the native Amerind. This led to conflict and the Jesuits were forced out of the village.

On the current site, you will see a simple, modern reconstruction of the colonial building. There you’ll also find a museum that displays artifacts dating back to the church's inauguration and following the Jesuit’s history through iconography, documents, and found artifacts all the way to the present day. • Historic site, full of culture. I believe that the collection could be greater, so the history of the site, but it is well worth the visit and very explanatory.

  • Great coffee and service. As a charity linked to the church though they could do better for the homeless population around. For example, if you are not visiting the museum, you have to pay to use the toilets. They should provide basic services for the homeless community.
  • A lovely square. Some homeless people around but if you act naturally and confidently all is well. Daytime is better. There area also guided tours. Free walks is a very good one. The Italian free walk guide Rocco is really good.
  • The oldest are in Sao Paulo. Beautiful small museum with a charming garden.

  • This place is an amazing history lesson of the city. The main attraction is the museum that shows a series of maps of São Paulo since its foundation, plus a great collection of sacred art from the beginnings of Brazil as a country. The restored church is also worth seeing - the interior looks quite stunning.
