  • Impressive architecture, soon realize why there are so many weddings there, I don't know if it stays open all the time, but it was Saturday afternoon and was having mass, if you look closely there's a small door under the stairs

  • The location of the Church is well situated which invites you to get to know the historical center. We had a service by a guide who presented a history of that Church that has enriched us culturally.

  • The Cathedral of São Luís do Maranhão (Cathedral of our Lady of victory) is the seat of the Archdiocese of the same name.  It is located in Pedro II Square, in the Centre of São Luís, the capital of the State of Maranhão, in Brazil. It is an important monument of the ancient core of the city, declared World Heritage site by UNESCO the Roman Catholic diocese of São Luís do Maranhão was established in 1677, ranging from Ceará to the North Cape (Amapá), being at the time dependent on the Patriarchate of Lisbon at the beginning of the Diocese, the Church of Our Lady of victory was used as a Cathedral. The building of the current Cathedral was not initially built with the goal of being thirsty catedralícia. In 1622, the Jesuit priests Luís Figueira and Benedito Amodei began construction of the College and the Church of Our Lady of light, in a location in which a chapel for French Capuchin Equinoceal in France. In 1690, began a new building, designed by the Jesuit priest Joao Felipe Bettendorf, raised with indigenous labour and opened in 1699. Next to the Church was the Jesuit College, a great cultural center of the region. In 1760, your bookstore had 5000 volumes. With the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, the assets of the company passed to the Crown. In 1761, a planning reform ordered by Governor Joaquim de melo and Povoas. the ancient Cathedral was demolished to clear the square in front of the Palace of the Governors. The Jesuit buildings, which were unoccupied, gained new uses: the College became the Palace of the bishops and the Church of the company became the city's Cathedral. The current decorative feature of the Palace is derived from a 19TH-century reform. The facade of the Cathedral was altered in the early 20th century, when he won two towers. In 1921-22 was elevated to seat of Archdiocese.

  • Very nice, lively Community Church! Are to be congratulated! The only criticism that I make is that there is a site of parish (at least I couldn't find). One of the main churches of St. Louis should have an effective means of communication with the community and with the tourists, especially with regard to timetables of mass, confession and parochial care. But I like to know, for sure I will return.
