Santo Antonio Church, Sao Luis
(2.5/5 based on 30 reviews on the web)
The historic center of Sao Luis was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and Santo Antonio Church is one of its most prominent buildings. This part of the city, known as Old Town, encompasses more than 3,500 colonial buildings, including several landmark religious structures. This imposing church, however, is less known for its architecture than the fact that it was the location of Father Antonio Vieira’s famous "Sermon to the Fishes." Vieira was a 17th century Portuguese Jesuit whose sermons became known for their imaginative power and dignity of language. Today, the well-preserved site is a popular tourist attraction and a major place of worship for the city’s large Catholic population. Using our custom trip planner, Sao Luis attractions like Santo Antonio Church can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Including it is possible observe several graves of people of Maranhão aristocracy in the past centuries, including the tomb of the legendary Anne Jansen, a rich woman and ahead of his time. Really worth knowing! Recommend ...
