Santo Antonio Church, Sao Luis

3.6
#13 of 20 in Historic Sites in Sao Luis
Church Tourist Spot
The historic center of Sao Luis was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and Santo Antonio Church is one of its most prominent buildings. This part of the city, known as Old Town, encompasses more than 3,500 colonial buildings, including several landmark religious structures. This imposing church, however, is less known for its architecture than the fact that it was the location of Father Antonio Vieira’s famous "Sermon to the Fishes." Vieira was a 17th century Portuguese Jesuit whose sermons became known for their imaginative power and dignity of language. Today, the well-preserved site is a popular tourist attraction and a major place of worship for the city’s large Catholic population. Using our custom trip planner, Sao Luis attractions like Santo Antonio Church can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Where to stay in Sao Luis

The more upmarket and characterful accommodations in Sao Luis can be found in the historical center, with atmospheric pousadas (guesthouses) and hotels in well-preserved colonial-era architecture. Head east of the Centro district to find budget hostels suitable for backpackers happy with simple lodgings, but who wish to be close to the main architectural sights. Larger, modern hotels lie along the island's northern coast, where a cluster of luxury and mid-range options offer rooms with sea views.

  • It is not famous or important because of its architecture, but because Father Antonio Vieira delivered there the "Sermon of St. Anthony to the Fishes".  more »
  • No rich story or architecture like other fancy churches in NE Brazil. Go to Igreja da Sé for the best inner art around.  more »
  • Even though I'm from São Luís city, had never visited the Church of St. Anthony, only passed down the street and d, until less than 1 month I had no idea of the "treasures" of the story, especially in the chapel of Bom Jesus dos Navegantes: see the exact place where Pe, Antônio Vieira preached, know that there is still the pulpit where he climbed. mp
