(4.4/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Translated as “The Palace of the Lions,” Palacio dos Leoes is the headquarters of the state of Maranhão. The site is recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO and has housed the governors of the region since the 17th century. Most of the facade and the interior was renovated and redesigned in the 19th century, although the extensive rear wing wasn’t added until 1906. During these two consecutive periods, much of the decorative art and collection of artworks was acquired. On your visit to the site, you will see a magnificent overview of the city that the ruling governors enjoyed daily.
