Palacio dos Leoes, Sao Luis

4.4
Translated as “The Palace of the Lions,” Palacio dos Leoes is the headquarters of the state of Maranhão. The site is recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO and has housed the governors of the region since the 17th century. Most of the facade and the interior was renovated and redesigned in the 19th century, although the extensive rear wing wasn’t added until 1906. During these two consecutive periods, much of the decorative art and collection of artworks was acquired. On your visit to the site, you will see a magnificent overview of the city that the ruling governors enjoyed daily. • There is not a lot of patience to guide the visitor enjoy the rooms and there is a gallery which is basically an advertisement for the ex-President Jose Sarney. However definitely worth a visit.

  • Very beautiful on the outside. Unfortunately we were told by an employee at the desk that the Palace is being renovated on the inside and for an indefinite period, closed to public.

Where to stay in Sao Luis

The more upmarket and characterful accommodations in Sao Luis can be found in the historical center, with atmospheric pousadas (guesthouses) and hotels in well-preserved colonial-era architecture. Head east of the Centro district to find budget hostels suitable for backpackers happy with simple lodgings, but who wish to be close to the main architectural sights. Larger, modern hotels lie along the island's northern coast, where a cluster of luxury and mid-range options offer rooms with sea views.
