#3 of 26 in Sightseeing in Sao Luis
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Translated as “The Palace of the Lions,” Palacio dos Leoes is the headquarters of the state of Maranhão. The site is recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO and has housed the governors of the region since the 17th century. Most of the facade and the interior was renovated and redesigned in the 19th century, although the extensive rear wing wasn’t added until 1906. During these two consecutive periods, much of the decorative art and collection of artworks was acquired. On your visit to the site, you will see a magnificent overview of the city that the ruling governors enjoyed daily. • Very beautiful on the outside. Unfortunately we were told by an employee at the desk that the Palace is being renovated on the inside and for an indefinite period, closed to public.

  • The building is your beginning in 1612 when the French established between the estuaries of the rivers Anil and Lokpal, the colony called France Équinoxiale. Began construction of Fort Saint Louis, in honour of King Louis IX of France. In 1615 the French were expelled. Among several reforms and changes, finally in the 1990 and 2000 the House was fully restored.

  • Place simply amazing, I loved everything I saw in the historic centre, and even more when I saw the Palace, and your surroundings. Also loved the great concentration of people playing the Pokémon Go! And the sense of security that the site gave me.

Where to stay in Sao Luis

The more upmarket and characterful accommodations in Sao Luis can be found in the historical center, with atmospheric pousadas (guesthouses) and hotels in well-preserved colonial-era architecture. Head east of the Centro district to find budget hostels suitable for backpackers happy with simple lodgings, but who wish to be close to the main architectural sights. Larger, modern hotels lie along the island's northern coast, where a cluster of luxury and mid-range options offer rooms with sea views.
