Cafua das Merces, Sao Luis

(55+ reviews on the web)
Specialty Museum
The two-room museum Cafua das Merces displays items from Brazilian slave past, featuring beautiful works of African art, and objects used in religious ceremonies, such as statuettes and drums. It is one of the few places where you can actually see a colonial torture device (pillory), a testament to arduous life imposed on slaves in the late 18th century. The building was used as a middle point where slaves, newly landed from the ships, were taken to the market to be sold.
