Cafua das Merces, Sao Luis

(3.2/5 based on 55+ reviews on the web)
The two-room museum Cafua das Merces displays items from Brazilian slave past, featuring beautiful works of African art, and objects used in religious ceremonies, such as statuettes and drums. It is one of the few places where you can actually see a colonial torture device (pillory), a testament to arduous life imposed on slaves in the late 18th century. The building was used as a middle point where slaves, newly landed from the ships, were taken to the market to be sold. • The location was a warehouse where he kept slaves for sale tells the story of blacks in the State of Maranhão. Parts used to hold slaves, to beat them, with shackles and chains. There is a replica of the pillory where slaves caught in St. Louis.
