Cafua das Merces, Sao Luis
(3.2/5 based on 55 reviews on the web)
The two-room museum Cafua das Merces displays items from Brazilian slave past, featuring beautiful works of African art, and objects used in religious ceremonies, such as statuettes and drums. It is one of the few places where you can actually see a colonial torture device (pillory), a testament to arduous life imposed on slaves in the late 18th century. The building was used as a middle point where slaves, newly landed from the ships, were taken to the market to be sold. • The room, though small, is a trip to the time of slavery. It was at this location that the slaves were housed. A guide will depicting everything that occurred on the site. There are numerous objects representative of the period and of the suffering of slaves. I love time travel, and see how they lived inhumanely our brother humanizes our gaze.

  • The Cafuá of mercy is a space where the slaves remained before being sold. and a small place but well preserved.

  • The Museum is a good stop for those visiting the historical centre of São Luiz. Unfortunately the location is not too favorable, although they stay near the Convent. Some residents have commented about not being a very safe place. This is the smallest Museum we visited, yet well worth it for conservation and by the objects exposed.
