Cafua das Merces, Sao Luis

#3 of 17 in Museums in Sao Luis
The two-room museum Cafua das Merces displays items from Brazilian slave past, featuring beautiful works of African art, and objects used in religious ceremonies, such as statuettes and drums. It is one of the few places where you can actually see a colonial torture device (pillory), a testament to arduous life imposed on slaves in the late 18th century. The building was used as a middle point where slaves, newly landed from the ships, were taken to the market to be sold. • The place is small, but worth to be aware of some elements that include the historical presence of blacks in the State of Maranhão.

  • When I visited was not completely open. Many of the attractions of Maranhão are suffering from the oversight of the competent organs, having to ban areas that need reform or offer risks.

  • The site, shows pieces of the time of slavery, and part of the history of blacks who have excelled in the fight against slavery. Talks about the customs of blacks and brings some objects of black culture.
