Montanha Sagrada, Sao Lourenco

#9 of 17 in Things to do in Sao Lourenco
The Alchemist (Alejandro Jodorowsky) assembles together a group of people from all walks of life to represent planets in the solar system. The occult adept s intention is to put the recruits though strange mystical rites and divest them of their worldly baggage before embarking on a trip to Lotus Island where they ascend The Holy Mountain to displace the immortal gods who secretly rule the universe. The big budget follow-up to Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo, The Holy Mountain premiered at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, causing riots to break out in response to Jodorowsky s flood of sacrilegious imagery, existential symbolism and spiritual quest for entitlement pitting illusion against truth. Visually and viscerally, the film is a masterwork that benefitted greatly from a labor intensive 2K scan restoration, which enhanced The Holy Mountain's color palate from its initial release.

When you get to the top of the sacred mountain can see part of the mountains of southern Minas Gerais. Very pretty.

Access to the holy mountain was the entrance of Santa Helena Farm, a little ahead of the battalion of the military police, and the course, which is up almost all the time and can be considered fairly steep, was done on foot (it is a narrow road, land, now paved). I don't know if they're allowing the passage of vehicles, but pedestrian passage is released and free. Following the road, almost on top of the Hill you reach a fork in the road: to the left, you have access to free flight ramp; moving on, you arrive at the place where is the set of transmission towers. Of the latter, one has a great view of my city of San Lorenzo, although there are some trees blocking a little vision. The most beautiful sight, however, is the Serra da Mantiqueira: you can view the Agulhas Negras, the Pedra da Mina, Itaguaré, Maher and many others, including a good part of the Serra do parrot. On the side of the free flight ramp there is mountains of great prominence as the mentioned, but you can clearly see the municipality of Carmo de Minas, the Green River, and the upstairs is also very beautiful and inspiring. Route full of pines. Recommend to walk even if you are in reasonable physical condition. Do well and enjoy it more.

Where to stay in Sao Lourenco

Unsuprisingly, the majority of accommodations in Sao Lourenco sit within a few minutes' walk of the large mineral lake in the center of town. You can stay on the edge of the lake, or next to the nearby park, to have easy access to the mineral springs that attract most people to the area. To feel closer to the natural surroundings, stay in one of the friendly, family-run inns on the edge of Sao Lourenco--most offer large gardens and some have even more land (you may find yourself among farm animals and vegetable patches as your hosts tend to their homegrown food).
