Forte Marechal Luz, Sao Francisco do Sul

#4 of 24 in Things to do in Sao Francisco do Sul
Forte Marechal Luz presents both a maritime history lesson and a convenient spot for family photographs with the coastline of Santa Catarina as a natural background. This fort, which was built in 1909 on the site of an earlier military structure (once used for harbor defense by the early Portuguese settlers), sits on the tip of João Dias Hill, from the top of which an unobstructed view of the northern coast opens up. The fort is currently maintained by the Brazilian navy, and you can visit it when you climb a short trail from the small beach located just below the hill. The Fort is already a historical highlight in the region. It is in part as a military base in use. It is clear, when you get to the gate. There are still soldiers in full uniform. The Fort is located at the mouth of the river. There it is mountainous and there are on different levels gun emplacements and news and radio equipment. The site is well chosen, because the mouth rather a large protected Bay is sufficiently deep water, so that here very early a Harbour was built. All ships must follow the fairway that immediately before the coastal battery past results. From the gun emplacements out, you have a beautiful view over the Bay, on the beach, on the Islands, the container port and the waterway. The gun emplacements are equipped with different guns. The most guns come from England and were made before the 1st World or before the 2nd World War. The most modern guns are in the positions on the beach on wheeled carriages. The older guns are partly as a turret with shatter protection. The necessary buildings for the commandery, conducting gun, the ammunition storage but also observation towers and a chapel belong to the gun emplacements. In addition to the gate and the gate building, there are also buildings that are used as a museum or a restaurant. So is provided also for the physical well-being. The visit has made me have fun. With a visit to the gun emplacements and observation of incoming and outgoing vessels can be too easily half a day.

The place is a Brazilian military heritage. Is the army. All nice and well taken care of. Ali ran a barracks, but it is currently used as a recreation area and visitation. I just thought the access a bit precarious. Street/road narrow and without coasting.

After deactivation, the facilities for the accommodation of soldiers and officers were converted into camp for the armed forces. Currently the accommodation and events can also be rented by the public, and the Fort is important tourist attraction of the island of São Francisco do Sul. The visitation to the fortification on the Hill is open to the public year-round, seven days a week. There is only a small entrance fee. Access to the top of the Hill is done by a road with good time can be carried over for vehicles. There are in addition to the old cannons a small military museum on the Hill. This museum has many pictures and pieces related to the history of the place.
