Sao Francisco Church and Covent, Salvador

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Churches, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 4,600+ reviews on the web
Built between 1708 and 1723, Sao Francisco Church and Covent is celebrated for its exuberant interior decoration including an important repository of Baroque art. As you approach the façade, you'll see a large stone cross and volute columns influenced by Mannerist architecture. Inside, all the walls, pillars, vaults, and ceilings are covered by golden sculptures made from gilt woodwork and ornate paintings. Blue and white tiles called azulejo depicting scenes from the life of St Francis of Assisi cover the lower parts of the walls in the main chapel and transept. The Portuguese-Brazilian Baroque gilt woodwork that you'll see in this church is a perfect example of igreja dourada, or "golden church." • The site is accessible in the historical centre of Salvador upon payment of fee of R $ 5, 00. The visit includes patio, internal rooms and the interior of the Church. What jumps the eye is the Splendor of the details worked out in gold. A paradox if compared to the simplicity that lived St. Francis of Assisi. In the surroundings appear guides for visiting the monument. Ask before the price.

  • An extraordinary piece of architecture lined with stunning gold all throughout the interior, this church is quite stunning to look at. Located in the Pelourinho area of Salvador it is a must see for anyone visiting the city. You don't have to be of any particular faith to simply admire the beauty of this great location.
  • A beautiful church in the finest Portuguese baroque tradition. Covered with 900kg of Gold. An amazing example of colonial architecture, but this church would still be pretty special even in Europe.
  • Beautiful gilded woodwork all over the interior. Calm and not many visitors at the time. Entry price was five real. Enjoyed it.
  • Spectacular. It is worthwhile to go don't miss it.
