Rio Branco Palace, Salvador

4.4
#9 of 25 in Historic Sites in Salvador
Architectural Building Historic Site
An imperious yet ornate construction, Rio Branco Palace makes no concessions to minimalism. Lovers of architecture will swoon at the immaculately preserved neoclassical, French-style façade that conceals an elegant, refined interior harking back to the colonial era of Brazilian history. Formerly a barracks and a prison, the building has undergone several reconstructions over the years--the most recent being in 1984--and is of cultural importance to both Salvador and the wider Bahia region. With our online itinerary creator, Salvador attractions like Rio Branco Palace can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.

  • Beautiful building with great views of the sea. Only one or two rooms are accessible with small exhibitions. The grand staircases and numerous other rooms not fulfilling their potential.
  • Beautiful, if you´re around here don´t miss it.
