Rio Branco Palace, Salvador

4.4
An imperious yet ornate construction, Rio Branco Palace makes no concessions to minimalism. Lovers of architecture will swoon at the immaculately preserved neoclassical, French-style façade that conceals an elegant, refined interior harking back to the colonial era of Brazilian history. Formerly a barracks and a prison, the building has undergone several reconstructions over the years--the most recent being in 1984--and is of cultural importance to both Salvador and the wider Bahia region. With our world travel planner, Salvador attractions like Rio Branco Palace can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • The Palacio Rio Branco is the former headquarters of the Government of Bahia and is located near the Lacerda elevator. Today it houses the Pedro Calmom Foundation, the Cultural foundation of the state of Bahia and the Memorial of the rulers. It is well preserved and the entrance is free.

  • The architecture is beautiful, but in the only room that is allowed to enter has nothing, but as it is located in a central point, it is worth the stop for a photo.

  • Beautiful building with great views of the sea. Only one or two rooms are accessible with small exhibitions. The grand staircases and numerous other rooms not fulfilling their potential.
  • This is a masterpiece of history, spectacular place.
  • Beautiful, if you´re around here don´t miss it.
