Rio Branco Palace, Salvador

4.3
An imperious yet ornate construction, Rio Branco Palace makes no concessions to minimalism. Lovers of architecture will swoon at the immaculately preserved neoclassical, French-style façade that conceals an elegant, refined interior harking back to the colonial era of Brazilian history. Formerly a barracks and a prison, the building has undergone several reconstructions over the years--the most recent being in 1984--and is of cultural importance to both Salvador and the wider Bahia region. With our world travel planner, Salvador attractions like Rio Branco Palace can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Near the top of the elevador Lacerda, stands the Palacio Rio Branco. It is possible to take pictures of a unique view of the Bay of all the Saints. There we have a small exhibition free of charge.

  • Currently, freshly renovated, beautiful appearance, and from the inside and out. It is the dominant building on the edge of the upper town, right at the exit from the elevator Lacerda. In the evening, lit, well visible from many points of the city (and from the top and from the lower level). An additional advantage of the Palace is a beautiful panorama of the Bay, visible from the terrace.

  • The Palacio Rio Branco has a Museum of old articles and screens. No cost to enter. The most impressive is the view of the Baia de Todos os Santos. Great for taking pictures. The site does not open on Sundays and holidays.

  • Beautiful building with great views of the sea. Only one or two rooms are accessible with small exhibitions. The grand staircases and numerous other rooms not fulfilling their potential.
  • Beautiful, if you´re around here don´t miss it.

  • The current building is from 1919, and your name is a reference to the Baron of Rio Branco. On 10 January 1912, the Palace was one of the points achieved by the bombing carried out in the city of Salvador, at the behest of the President Hermes da Fonseca. The building was practically in ruins. Among the various losses, the most painful was the vanquishing spell Rico's collection of rare books which lay on the ground. After then, started the reconstruction, being reopened by Governor Antônio Muniz Sodré, in 1919. The re-erected Palace was named "White River", in homage to one of the greatest Brazilian statesmen, the Baron of Rio Branco. Today it houses the Pedro Calmon Foundation, Cultural Foundation of Bahia State and the "Memorial of the Governors".
