Ordem Terceira do Carmo church, Salvador

4.4
Built in the 19th century on the site of an older church, Ordem Terceira do Carmo church is located in the historic heart of town and houses the famous Nossa Senhora do Carmo statue. The statue is believed to be the likeness of the daughter of a powerful landholder who once held sway over the entire region. The statue’s creator, known locally as Half-Caste, was a slave with no artistic training and a passionate love for the landowner’s young daughter. Cradled in the statue’s arms is a life-size image of Christ with black features (like the artist’s would have been), which once made it one of the most scandalous images in the country. You can see the infamous sculpture, with its 2,000 rubies representing Christ’s tears, inside the church’s adjoining museum. • The sacred art as close and creepy, I'm not Catholic, but I was delighted with all the cultural richness of the place.

  • The Church of San Francesco located in the upper part of Pelorinho, historic district of Bahia, is a church of the poor appearance has nothing in that occurs within all finished in gold. Next to the church there is a cloister and convent, where you enter a fee, where you can admire the walls ornamented with multiple azuleos with different religious events. In these churches once a week is offered the "pane of the" poor and then marvel at the long line of needy waiting outside their ration. Church monument that you don't have to miss out on a visit to Salvador Bahia

  • It's in an abandonment of crying. There's a sign telling works from 2014 to end in Apr/2016. More than R $8,000,000 and almost nothing has been done. Sad.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
