Ordem Terceira do Carmo church, Salvador

4.4
#11 of 26 in Historic Sites in Salvador
Church Tourist Spot
Built in the 19th century on the site of an older church, Ordem Terceira do Carmo church is located in the historic heart of town and houses the famous Nossa Senhora do Carmo statue. The statue is believed to be the likeness of the daughter of a powerful landholder who once held sway over the entire region. The statue’s creator, known locally as Half-Caste, was a slave with no artistic training and a passionate love for the landowner’s young daughter. Cradled in the statue’s arms is a life-size image of Christ with black features (like the artist’s would have been), which once made it one of the most scandalous images in the country. You can see the infamous sculpture, with its 2,000 rubies representing Christ’s tears, inside the church’s adjoining museum. Ordem Terceira do Carmo church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Salvador Edition.

  • The Igreja da Ordem Terceira do Carmo was opened in 1803, your facade is decorated with limestone stones brought from Portugal. You pay a small fee to access the interior of the temple and also the Museum annex, where the Image of the Lord Killed, carved by the famous Bahian artist Francisco Manoel das Chagas, known as "the Goat". The drops of blood are made with 2,000 rubies from India. Worth the visit.

  • Go to Salvador and not go to Santo Antonio do Carmo, my journey is incomplete. I love walking through those streets and its historic mansions, could be more preserved and more enlightened, but is a place too beautiful,

  • It seems abandoned by the Government, but is rich in history, especially if you hire the local guide. They only open in the morning. It has a church, and this is the best place to visit, including basements where the slaves lived. But only with a guide.

  • It's in an abandonment of crying. There's a sign telling works from 2014 to end in Apr/2016. More than R $8,000,000 and almost nothing has been done. Sad.

  • The town has a church every 100 m and all very beautiful and with history. This was recorded in the staircase film O Pagador de Promessas.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
