Ordem Terceira do Carmo church, Salvador

4.5
Built in the 19th century on the site of an older church, Ordem Terceira do Carmo church is located in the historic heart of town and houses the famous Nossa Senhora do Carmo statue. The statue is believed to be the likeness of the daughter of a powerful landholder who once held sway over the entire region. The statue’s creator, known locally as Half-Caste, was a slave with no artistic training and a passionate love for the landowner’s young daughter. Cradled in the statue’s arms is a life-size image of Christ with black features (like the artist’s would have been), which once made it one of the most scandalous images in the country. You can see the infamous sculpture, with its 2,000 rubies representing Christ’s tears, inside the church’s adjoining museum. • Place full of stories, little publicized, but very interesting. Unfortunately it needs maintenance, but it is still worth knowing. The Christ with over 5000 rubies is a monument to the part, it's GORGEOUS ❤️ Super recommend

  • I enjoyed my visit to this church. There are several interesting and beautiful historic details within the building. It seems the structure is in need of some restoration. Perhaps the most impressive ...  more »
  • Little publicized place, but it's beautiful and has an amazing story. He has the Christ with 2000 rubies and the way of the slaves in his basement, and the church is beautiful too.

  • There were three aspects of this church that made it so remarkable. As a house of worship, it’s stunning in true Português catholic opulence. Secondly, the museum provides a good cross section of the wealth of the church and of Brazil at the time. Thirdly, downstairs, you get a real wake up call when you see the tunnels where slaves were processed and held captive which in turn provided Brazil its wealth as this was the labour force for coffee
  • The main gate is always closed so one may get the wrong impression. The entrance to the church is through a side door on the left! The church itself is amazing! The combination of the tyrquoise walls juxtaposed with many gold plated baroque decorative elements, is unique! A must see!!!
