  • I went there many times during the approximately 35 years I go to Brazil, and every time hoping that something would change. Always looking for something different, new, local craft products worth buying. NOTHING AT ALL. In more than 30 years nothing has changed. It's a menagerie of banalitá who are there only for ripping off tourists naïve. Fake everything. In decades and decades have failed to come up with one new: the same things. It is a point of tourist attraction entirely unjustified. The market structure is nice. But beyond this, stop. Frankly, if you want to bother as kids and fake snacks in costumes trying to rip you off money in all ways that are not easily mollandovi, Mercado Modelo and the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (another rip-off for tourists) are unsurpassed.

  • This giant market. Don't buy souvenirs in the historic centre or in malls. On the market you'll find model of all. Clay dolls, lace, towels, souvenir!

  • Worth the visit, but will only find industrialized trinkets. Rare the kiosks that sell some more refined craftsmanship and signed by artists. Saw a tent, you've seen them all.

  • More or less same stuff you can buy at the local airport, but in a greater variety and more fun to shop here. Mercado Modelo hasn't changed for last 10 years. The neighborhood is pretty dangerous by night.
  • Great place to buy souvenirs from Salvador! It's an old market with all kind of stuff that you can imagine, from clothes to food! Some prices are negotiable!
  • Super fun market with fair prices. Have some beer in the back!
  • Be careful here .. agressive marketing at its best .. makes it uncomfortable for the people who come to visit
  • Typical tourist trap. Go for the local food, especially sweets. Avoid the restaurant.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
