Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, Salvador

The most famous church in Salvador, Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim has a long standing history of granting miracles. As you approach the gate, you'll notice it's covered with colorful tissue strips called fitas. Children will try to sell you this colored paper that you can tie to the gate and around your wrist for good luck.

This plain 18th-century building on the small peninsula north of downtown has astonishing symbols inside. At the back of the church, you'll find valuable and significant objects that people have donated as thanks for miracles in the Room of Miracles. And for even odder iconography, look at the hanging body parts cast in plastic, wood, and metal hanging from the ceiling in the Room of Thanks. • Charming church with a light energy that makes you feel like spending hours and hours watching the coming and going of people

  • Note 9 The only problem are the people who are approaching to buy everything. It becomes too boring to surround you

  • Too beautiful church, has several sculptures of saints inside each one more beautiful than the other, a very interesting and beautiful story, loved to know.

  • Good vibe to get your blessings. Given the importance in Brazil you would expect a grand church. It is, however relatively small and simple, but never the less impressive for its significance for the faithful in Brazil. Great photo opportunities with the colourful Senhor do Bonfim ribbons tied to the church gate.
  • One os the most spiritual experiences on my travels. Getting blessed by the Baiana and leaving my prayers on the ribbons gate gave me more than I was bargaining for. I'm not a religious person but it was a very enlightening experience. Felt very light and relaxed afterwards. Definitely recommend
  • A small but nice church for Brazilians.
  • What an odd and eclectic church that proves that humans will believe pretty much anything. If you have any ailments or disease of the body, no problems, get the afflicted limb cast in wax and then hang it from the ceiling of the church - completely normal! Because it’s a point of pilgrimage you’re also harassed to purchase ribbons to tie to the church fence - wasn’t sure of the point of this but it does make for a colourful backdrop for portrait photos
  • This church in Brazil has a lot of history. If you come to Salvador and don't visit the church, you are missing out. The church has a room full of photos and cast body parts which represent a 'miracle room', Brazilians believe in Saints, and when they get a miracle, they bring a photo or something; that will represent it. The wristbands that you will see everywhere are very famous in Brazil. It means when you tie it to your wrist, you need to make 3 wishes in every single knot, (3 knots, 1 wish for each) when it come loose, the wishes comes true. The church has daily mass and it is beautiful inside. It is a perfect place to go and watch the sunset. Enjoy!
