Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People, Salvador

4.5
Built in a town that hosted the first slave port in Brazilin, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People is a reminder of the determination of people who refused to give up on faith. The slaves who worshipped there constructed the church in the 18th century because they weren't allowed in the settlers' churches. The wooden ceiling is painted with ornate allegory, but the rest of the structure is simple and functional in its design. Outside the front of the church you will find a plaque giving background on the building in English. The graveyard behind the church is home to the remains of Anastasia, a local heroine who has become legend in Brazil's history. I am devotee of St. Anthony of Categero! This church is beautiful! Small is beautiful! The service is wonderful! The singing is different and vibrant. I went and now I'm going to Salvador and as soon as he arrives, I will attend the mass.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
