Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People, Salvador

4.6
Built in a town that hosted the first slave port in Brazilin, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People is a reminder of the determination of people who refused to give up on faith. The slaves who worshipped there constructed the church in the 18th century because they weren't allowed in the settlers' churches. The wooden ceiling is painted with ornate allegory, but the rest of the structure is simple and functional in its design. Outside the front of the church you will find a plaque giving background on the building in English. The graveyard behind the church is home to the remains of Anastasia, a local heroine who has become legend in Brazil's history. • Located in Largo do Pelourinho the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of blacks was built by slaves in the EIGHTEENTH century and carries with it a lot of history and is located in the historic center of Salvador, in Pelourinho. Every Tuesday happens to Afro mass to the sound of atabaques with lots of vibration and corners, it's creepy.

  • You pay 5 reais at the entrance and have no guide. Church simpler than the others, but by its historical value of the slave community of the time, it is worthwhile. It is the first church that is seen at the entrance of Pelourinho, it is worthwhile.

  • The church is super well localised, easily accessible for the elderly and children and is one of the only ones in the world that the Vatican authorized the Uniao of Catholicism with touches of the Candomblé. It is very worthwhile this experience. Exciting. The very beautiful words and the atmosphere very good.

  • In the heart of the old city is this beautiful blue church. In the middle of the chaos, you can seek a quiet place to relax out of the sun and enjoy the ‘over the top’ catholic attempts to convince others of a god and also to get a better spot in heaven - it’s opulent! There is a small museum dedicated to slavery at the back of the church with a couple of interesting stories - especially about an African slave who was considered a hero for defying the Português

  • To go to church is to go to a place of faith, of spirituality. The Catholic Christian faith has in Bahia, in Salvador, one of the most beautiful representations of faith and identity in the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of blacks. Very good power to enter, participate in part of the mass. Wonderful experience.
