  • Salvador is a city of a great religious heritage with lot of some very old churches as this important Cathedral located in city centre, in plaza Piedade. I was hosted at Rua Carlos Gomes, very close to this huge building surrounded by great commercial movement. But the bar or rest of Salvador easily will arrive in the buses that say Piedade. At the beginning was the Hospice of the Capuchins of mercy, was built between 1683 and 1686. Until the year 1702, the convent was cared by the Capuchin Friars of the District of France. Two years after the suppression, in 1705, Italian Capuchin took the House. In 1712, the Hospice of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad was elevated to the residence and the City Council, receiving the name of Mission Bay and the São Francisco River. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, has already undergone many reforms since its construction, while the Italian Capuchins assumed the mission, they found for demolish the Church and rebuild it in current patterns, still an imposing church. Started the construction of the Hospice of our Lady of piety by the order of Capuchin lesser brothers French, in the second half of the 17TH century, which was opened in 1686. The French Capuchins were expelled for political reasons in 1700 and were replaced by the Capuchins of the Propaganda Fide Congregation of Italian origin. The place went through reforms and enlargements in periods of 1709 to 1717 and 1809-1825. At the beginning of the 20th century the building's facade was modified. Currently, the convent and the Church are well preserved. August 1, 2016, the Church was elevated to Archdiocesan shrine title, by the Archbishop of Salvador, Archbishop Murilo Krieger, in commemoration for the Jubilee of the 330 years of construction. Recommend learn this important building that is part of the history and the Catholicism of Salvador and Bahia.

  • The Church is magnificent, with a clear, white and few details. I always like to take a walk by all the way and see the Church and its details at all angles. When doing a prayer beside the main altar, I felt a hand on my shoulder. A gentleman asking for mercy $2.00.
