  • Red River's House of Jorge Amado and Zélia Gawain is a good choice of cheap ride (R $20.00 for adults and Wednesday is free!) to anyone by Salvador and want to do something different and fresh. Yes, cool cuz you can sit on the benches of the House Garden, under the shade of a mango tree. The visit to the House can be guided or not, depends on the taste and autonomy of each. I was a little disappointed with the interior of the House, even if kept, is only the main room mischaracterized, is the master bedroom's furniture, the other rooms have been transformed and showrooms with shelves and glass. I was hoping to find the environments with more "face" of the House, furnished rooms, kitchen with stove and other cooking utensils, bathrooms (no bathroom sample!), wanted to see the House and not a memorial. Most significant point of view is the garden and the banks where Jorge and Zélia sat hand in hand, and where are the ashes of both, protected by a sculpture of a large frog. Jorge Amado was fond of frogs, had several collection in various materials. Tourists should take a taxi, the House sits on a hill, residential street and hard to park. Place is accessibility, Elevator, small shop and micro diner.

  • It's worth every penny. A sensory experience in Salvador. There is no one with the same style. In addition to remind me of childhood, explains about the work and life of George and Zélia. Excellent. I'm going again.

  • House where Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai lived, which exposes so beautiful and take life the couple recognized writers not only in Brazil, as in the world. In place of exhibitions for their personal belongings such as clothes, glasses, photos, letters exchanged by the couple in moments away, passages from books written by hand and etc. All this accompanied by audios telling the story of the books and testimonials from other artists talking about Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai. It's really an amazing site with many stories to tell tourists that visit! The whole entry costs R real and $20.00 on Wednesdays, admission is free.

  • Lots to explore. I didn't know anything about George Amado but now I know how his kitchen and bedroom looked like. It was a cool place to see. Seems like a good source of information on Bahian culture.
  • Good to see if you know Jorge Amado or are interested in Bahian culture. The gardens are great and the house itself is pretty impressive, but lacks lots of things from how it originally was. One of the guides speaks English. Can be difficult to park on the street, normally full.
  • Well preserved, immersive and interactive. A highly insightful look into Jorge & Zelia's lives, loves and inspirations. Free on Wednesdays too.
  • Great restoration and very well organized guided visit. No languages other than Portuguese, though.
  • This is a very interesting place to visit: a family home of Brazilian writers Jorge Amado & Zelia Gattai turned into a charming house museum; a great place to learn about the spirit of Bahia, and also experience the much talked about "bohemian" heritage of the Rio Vermelho neighbourhood. Recommended.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
