The oldest museum in the state of Bahia, having been founded in 1918, Bahia Art Museum is the home of approximately 5,000 works of art, many of which are of significant artistic and historical value. Allow yourself to become lost in the museum’s collection, which boasts a variety of artifacts assembled from a number of different sources. Be sure not to miss the paintings of José Teófilo de Jesus or the museum’s collection of work from the European schools of art. If you prefer architecture to art, you’re sure to be impressed by the building’s neo-colonial grandeur and colorfully tiled interior. Very nice room, but a little outdated and interactive museum. Clean, well maintained but no big news, I expected more of a museum so important.

Wonderful place overlooking the baía de Todos os Santos and in the background the famous island of Vera Cruz and Itaparica. Not always have exposure, but the ride is worth it anyway. Inside is a restaurant very good, but expensive. On Saturdays in high season there is music at sunset, jazz.

Meet this Museum worth because it has the Imperial era furniture, but also houses contemporary exhibitions.

Super building housing lots of fine arts from the colonial era in particular. Free entry and there is a small shop with some excellent art books.

Where to stay in Salvador

The majority of accommodations in Salvador fall into three distinct groupings. If you want to be close to the best historical attractions, stay in or near the old town of Pelourinho, a few minutes from the city's west-facing coastline. This also puts you in the heart of Salvador's tourist-driven nightlife. Your second option is to stay at the southwestern tip of the city, in the neighborhood of Barram, where you'll have instant access to one of Salvador's favorite beaches. Finally, look a bit farther afield to Rio Vermelho, a quieter beachside neighborhood facing south.
