Urca, Rio de Janeiro

(4.7/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Tucked away at the foot of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugar Loaf mountain, the wealthy residential neighborhood of Urca is also home to Forte São João, a seventeenth-century fort located at the site of the first Portuguese settlement in Rio. Although the fort is still a functional military base, visitors are allowed in to visit its museum, but the main attraction is the extraordinary location. The fort's soccer field, with the Sugar Loaf behind one goal, the fort behind the other, and the beach running along one side, is arguably the most spectacularly located soccer field in the world. Elsewhere in Urca you can relax on the distinctive red sand of Vermelha Beach, only a stone's throw from the cable car station leading up to the Sugar Loaf, or follow the 2 km (1.2 mi) adventure trail beginning on the beach, through a short stretch of tropical rainforest populated by monkeys and lush plant life. • The Urca is one of those neighborhoods that give the feeling of being an inner city by the quiet and calm walking its streets. The Guanabara Bay and Corcovado is wonderful!

  • A nice, beautiful mto district by the architecture of the houses and with several restaurants. A place to feel at home and enjoy the tranquillity.

  • There is an energy in the environment, art in architectural traits that slide by various times. In all has rich touches of detail that refer us to a whirlwind of thoughts. The sense of peace and relaxation that there exists leaves a unique atmosphere almost like an island of relaxation in the chaotic world of the current Rio de Janeiro. In fact I think this aspect, translates as the most impressive of that place, to set foot there, looks like we leave behind the gravity "ipsis litteris" carioca city and we look back in time (the golden age), where a subtle calmness pervaded people's minds. To Crown it all, there still exists the famous wall that the Seaview, where you can enjoy some appetizers from the bar Urca and drink something cold. I consider it a privilege. Feel free with the air of the place and its people, enjoy and preserve that peace.
