Urca, Rio de Janeiro
(4.7/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Tucked away at the foot of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugar Loaf mountain, the wealthy residential neighborhood of Urca is also home to Forte São João, a seventeenth-century fort located at the site of the first Portuguese settlement in Rio. Although the fort is still a functional military base, visitors are allowed in to visit its museum, but the main attraction is the extraordinary location. The fort's soccer field, with the Sugar Loaf behind one goal, the fort behind the other, and the beach running along one side, is arguably the most spectacularly located soccer field in the world. Elsewhere in Urca you can relax on the distinctive red sand of Vermelha Beach, only a stone's throw from the cable car station leading up to the Sugar Loaf, or follow the 2 km (1.2 mi) adventure trail beginning on the beach, through a short stretch of tropical rainforest populated by monkeys and lush plant life. • Its streets are quiet and safe already is surrounded by military staff. Neighborhood with Portuguese-style houses where in addition you can visit the Bay of Guanabara.

  • This to me is one of the best views of the river. Especially when you're on the short wall and with a beer ... passing the River, well worth stopping and taking a cold over there.

  • The neighborhood is relatively safe and the view wonderful. The trick is to go around the time of sunset and enjoy the scenery. Many people drink beer on the wall, in this case, arrive before yet because lota.
