Urca, Rio de Janeiro

Categories: Neighborhoods, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web
Tucked away at the foot of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugar Loaf mountain, the wealthy residential neighborhood of Urca is also home to Forte São João, a seventeenth-century fort located at the site of the first Portuguese settlement in Rio. Although the fort is still a functional military base, visitors are allowed in to visit its museum, but the main attraction is the extraordinary location. The fort's soccer field, with the Sugar Loaf behind one goal, the fort behind the other, and the beach running along one side, is arguably the most spectacularly located soccer field in the world. Elsewhere in Urca you can relax on the distinctive red sand of Vermelha Beach, only a stone's throw from the cable car station leading up to the Sugar Loaf, or follow the 2 km (1.2 mi) adventure trail beginning on the beach, through a short stretch of tropical rainforest populated by monkeys and lush plant life. • Great to be in Urca. A neighborhood with identity. The Red beach is great to bring kids. I love going to the Yacht Club for a coffee with friends who live in the neighborhood. Leave the boat and make a pleasant stroll.

  • This area of Rio de Janeiro is without doubt one of the most beautiful places and on sunny days is possible to see the boats and the waters and the stones form a beautiful postcard. The location is lush and unique.
