The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, Rio de Janeiro
(4.2/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
The seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese, The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian boasts a celebrated modern design inspired by Mayan pyramids. Dedicated to the city's patron saint, the cathedral features four long strips of colorful stained glass windows, spanning 64 m (210 ft) from the floor to the illuminated cross on the ceiling. The building's construction started in the mid-1960s and took 15 years to complete. Step inside to see the awe-inspiring interior: stripped of any excessive decoration, the spacious hall can accommodate nearly 20,000. • Cathedral of Rio, replacing the original which was used by the Kings of Portugal. Student project of the 1970s who won, the same may be standing 25 thousand people. Place where the Pope step.

  • A welcoming church. Does not require brilliance of gold, as many others. Has a beautiful stained-glass Windows. Is in Lapa

  • A little strange and completely different turns out to be the Cathedral of the city of Rio de Janeiro. I think like many other people I was shocked enough to know that this was the city's Cathedral since I definitely expected something more conservative and traditional, but hey, it is pretty wide, I have read that it has a capacity for 20 thousand people standing; its largest and most beautiful stained glass forming together with the cross of the roof a beautiful postcard to remind deserve special mention.

  • From the inside far more beautiful than from the outside
  • A piece of art. Even if you're not religous, it is a worthy visit for its grandiness.
  • Odd building that truly unravels once you go inside
  • Absolutely gorgeous and beautiful. A must go place in Rio
