Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, Rio de Janeiro

Experience a 360-degree view of western Rio from Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, a small church sitting atop one of the city’s largest favelas. The church is famous for its 382 stone steps, climbed by faithful pilgrims first by standing, and then by kneeling on each step. You too can reach the top on foot, or more comfortably by taking a short cable-car ride, which is free of charge. Dating back to the 17th century, the building was originally a small chapel built by a sea captain named Baltasar de Abreu Cardoso. Today the church is the site of frequent special masses and local celebrations. Time your visit for a special event to see local choirs and folkloric groups perform traditional songs and dances. • One of the most traditional shrines of Rio de Janeiro, Penha Church always caught my attention since I was a kid, until on a beautiful sunny day, when I was walking near the same, I decided to go up and see the place. The story of the Chapel is the former, according to some, are nearly four centuries of history, and as in all the historical shrines, the Penha Church was taking shape over time. First came the Chapel, which gave place to a chapel, the famous staircase was born in the 19th century and the current building was erected in the early 20th century. The place sacred to Catholics stands out for your vista, the center of the river and the North zone unspools ahead of whom face the stairs. In the month of outuro the famous party of the parish, or feast of the Church of Pandi, in which many will honor. In recent years opened a tram that takes devotees and tourists to the chapel. I suggest the clear days, who leave the incomparable view. Although beautiful, being in Rio, I suggest you go on busy periods and travel in packs. It is worth remembering that you should not show objects during ascent (for lovers of photography can come up with cameras). Because the area is deserted and near places of conflict, so you can't be too careful.

  • The ascent to the Church is not as tiring as it looks, the steps are small. There are also trams that lead the visitors to the Church. Reaching the top of the Hill, you can get a panoramic view of a part of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
