Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, Rio de Janeiro

(4.2/5 based on 120 reviews on the web)
Experience a 360-degree view of western Rio from Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, a small church sitting atop one of the city’s largest favelas. The church is famous for its 382 stone steps, climbed by faithful pilgrims first by standing, and then by kneeling on each step. You too can reach the top on foot, or more comfortably by taking a short cable-car ride, which is free of charge. Dating back to the 17th century, the building was originally a small chapel built by a sea captain named Baltasar de Abreu Cardoso. Today the church is the site of frequent special masses and local celebrations. Time your visit for a special event to see local choirs and folkloric groups perform traditional songs and dances. • Sensational ride even for non-Catholics because with the pacification of slums in your surroundings the church became an excellent point of view for all Rio de Janeiro and climb your 365 steps is already a good penance.

  • The sanctuary is in the neighborhood of Penha, North of the river. Easy access by public transport, because the entrance to the sanctuary is one of the main streets that cross the neighbourhood. The Church is very beautiful and well cared for, and still offers a 360-degree view of the region, with emphasis on the International Airport that lies ahead and the Guanabara Bay. It is worth remembering that there is a slope from the entrance of the shrine to the door of the Church allowing easier access for people with mobility problems.
