Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, Rio de Janeiro
(4.3/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Experience a 360-degree view of western Rio from Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, a small church sitting atop one of the city’s largest favelas. The church is famous for its 382 stone steps, climbed by faithful pilgrims first by standing, and then by kneeling on each step. You too can reach the top on foot, or more comfortably by taking a short cable-car ride, which is free of charge. Dating back to the 17th century, the building was originally a small chapel built by a sea captain named Baltasar de Abreu Cardoso. Today the church is the site of frequent special masses and local celebrations. Time your visit for a special event to see local choirs and folkloric groups perform traditional songs and dances. • Beautiful, located in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro is a serene place. It has a sloping part where there's a great structure that has two cable cars.. Although more than 300 steps ... it's worth the visit.

  • The shrine of Nossa Senhora da Penha is located in the neighborhood of Penha, not really quiet. It is placed on top of a small hill and is visible from far away given that dominates the space below. You can go there by train and get off at Penha and then get them to walk but I donot. Much better to go by taxi. Several buses depart from the city centre up to Penha. The 483 (Penha-Copacabana)-485 (Penha-Siqueira Campos)-497 (Penha-Cosme Velho). To get out of there are about 380 steps but are not difficult and high you can climb easily, if you had problems there would be a "bondinho" that carries you on for free. It's a normal Church, don't expect something huge. A peculiarity is that climbing the stairs everyone believes that you are in front of the shrine, but no, it's back because the front overlooking the surrounding area. Especially the view of the city. If you want to listen to the mass, I would not be wrong but there is eight to 10 in the morning. EYE THAT IT'S A DANGEROUS NEIGHBORHOOD, WALKED IN THE GATE OF THE SHRINE, AT THE BASE OF THE STAIRCASE, THERE ARE SAFETY ISSUES.

  • The Church is far from the city centre, but worth the visit. You can go up by cable car or by the staircase, which has steps and facilitates the ascent/descent. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and was going to have a wedding her, so the Church was busy and I couldn't visit well. My advice to those who are on Saturday to consult whether or not event. The Church is beautiful as well as the view of it from above. A different place of the landmarks.
