Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach, Rio de Janeiro

4.6
#9 of 32 in Beaches in Rio de Janeiro
Beach Nature / Park
With its sweeping arc of soft white sand, blue ocean, and palm trees, Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach is everything you’d expect from a Brazilian beach, but without the crowds. You can pick a spot, settle down, and, due to legislation restricting the height of nearby buildings, peacefully enjoy the sunshine well into the afternoon. There is, however, a good chance you might end up an extra in a Brazilian soap opera as scenes are regularly filmed on the beach. The wide boardwalk is great for a stroll and lined with kiosks, where you can buy cold beer, fresh coconut water, and tasty snacks. Put Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach and other Rio de Janeiro attractions into our Rio de Janeiro vacation builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

  • I loved this beach and at a walking or cycling distance the beaches near by also. The cycle route is great, not awfully packed even at the weekend - I went cycling all the way to praia da macumba and ...  more »
  • This one of the best beaches in Rio because is far from the crowdy of South Zone and Barra. If you are of the kind that wants to have your own space and relax in a beach day, this is an excellent choi...  more »
  • If you want to relax and not get bothered like at Ipanema or even worse Copacabana beach, take a trip to Recreio or even closer Barra beach. Much cleaner and safer.  more »
