Real Gabinete Portugues Da Leitura, Rio de Janeiro

(4.6/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
A Reading Room of the Portuguese Community in Brazil exists in Rio, Salvador and Santos, and the movement to constitute these institutions began in the 1840's. They were founded and financed by Portuguese individuals of the time, and of all of them, maybe the most interesting is the one in Rio de Janeiro. The institution in Rio became \"Royal\" only in 1906, just 4 years before the end of the monarchy in Portugal. The library holds important historical documents which date from the Portuguese discovery of Brazil, and has since diversified to serve the needs of modern library users. The architectural style of the building is Neo Manueline, with all the stonework of the façades and other elements sculpted and sent out from Lisbon. The actual reading room has a cast iron structure and thus the \"ensemble\" shows strong similarities with the contemporary works at Belém (Extensions to the Jeronimos Monastery and the Rossio station in central Lisbon, neither of which were designed by Rafael da Silva e Castro. The final authorship of the project is a little confused as administration of the works was carried out in Brazil by others.

  • This place is great. It's a little bit offbeat, and the books here are ancient! Worth visiting.
  • Fabuloso.
A library focused on Portuguese literature. Its collection is exposed in a sumptuous way - it feels like it could be a Harry Potter scenario
