Quinta da Boa Vista, Rio de Janeiro

4.0
#6 of 43 in Historic Sites in Rio de Janeiro
Zoo / Aquarium Historic Site
Quinta da Boa Vista was once the garden refuge to the emperors of the Brazil in the 19th century. Prior to the royals, the land belonged to a Jesuit farmer who took great pride in its views and lush vegetation. However, upon arrival of the Prince Regent John the VI, the farmer made a gift of his land to the new ruler. The property became a favorite spot for the prince. He made the farm his main residence due to its seclusion and beauty. You will still find the rich greenery lovingly cultivated by a Jesuit farmer and graciously gifted to a prince.

As the city grew, the swampland surrounding the Quinta da Boa Vista and the palace was filled in to give access to the city. The palace located on the grounds in now the home of the National Museum, where you will find a collection of artwork and artifacts from all over Brazil. Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

  • We walked around the park after coming here to go to the museum and zoo. Unfortunately the zoo was closed for refurbishment. We came across the circus (Unicirco Marcos Frota) by accident, and decided ...  more »

  • A pleasant park adjacent to the zoo. The park is free but parking is R$15 or on the street for free if you can get there early enough. Nice grounds with a lake, a museum and some food vendors. Others ...  more »

  • Excellent place with long stretches of green areas , ponds and gardens. Good for a picnic far from the hustle and bustle from touristier spots like Copa.
  • Pleasant and safe, at least during events, the park looks clean and family-friendly. Great place to enjoy some time outdoors without having to go all the way to Zona Sul.
  • A lovely space for walking, jogging or cycling. The main problem is security
  • It is a good place to visit. It is near to Metro "São Cristovão". You can find the zoo of the city and the NAtional museum
  • Nice park for chilling before going to the maracana or after visiting Sao Christovao market place.
