Pedra do Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro

#3 of 2,013 in Beaches in Brazil
Take an evening walk to Pedra do Arpoador to see a spectacular change of colors as the sun sets over the calm ocean. This part of the coast is noted for being one of the finest urban surfing spots in the country, with a rock outcrop famous for creating breakers up to 3 m (10 ft) high. Keep in mind that because of its metropolitan location, the beach does get extremely crowded with very competitive surfers. Strong riptides allow a very small take-off point, so only locals and visiting experts have a real shot at surfing here. Casual tourist can enjoy views of the beach from a long seaside pathway, which is dotted with small alfresco cafés, where you sit down for a relaxing meal at sunset. • One of the most remarkable sunsets you will ever see in your life, between the two brothers mountains it is just unbelievable. It is a ritual, everybody goes to the Arpoador Stone to wait the sunset a...  more »
  • As a kid I learned "alligator", way to go down the waves with 1 arm only, like surfing without Board, at the end of the beach a rock where many go up to see waves of the wave, next has the so-called Devil's Beach, beach small but dangerous There is also a square, where they make shows. Great place for Praia baths of day trips.

  • Aapoador is just toward the end of ipenama beach and is like a big section of rock extending into the ocean. you get a splendid view of the ipename beach from their. Mind you its very crowded during the evening as most of the crowd climbs up to see the awsm sunset.
  • Located between 2 colossal names of the Carioca´s beach scene, Copacabana and Ipanema, this rocky place is very popular among locals and tourists for being one of the city´s best spot to watch "A por do sol", which means "Sunset" in Portuguese. The view from Arpoador is truly beautiful, and, no matter where you look at, left or right, the panorama will always be astonishingly nice. Of course the Ipanema beach´s side offers the nicest angle, especially for admiring the sunset. The Morro Dois Irmaos (the famous 2 spiky mountains overlooking Ipanema), the many tropical palm trees, the infinite water mantle, combined with the magic color of the sun while going down, is something truly inspiring. Cute fact: when the sun is all the way down and the darkness kicks in, people say goodbye to the old day with a genuine applause. A very happy way to celebrate the end of the day.
  • This was an decent place to view Ipanema beach and the surrounding areas. It was a fair walk from there metro station but with the effort.
  • Try the sunset. Fantastic either way.
  • The view is different from here, there are big and beautiful rocks like it was a piece of the Croatian coast. Huge cactuses and palm trees make the scene even more exotic. In a clear day you can make nice photos about the whole Ipanema bay.
