Pedra do Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro

#3 of 32 in Beaches in Rio de Janeiro
Beach Nature / Park
Take an evening walk to Pedra do Arpoador to see a spectacular change of colors as the sun sets over the calm ocean. This part of the coast is noted for being one of the finest urban surfing spots in the country, with a rock outcrop famous for creating breakers up to 3 m (10 ft) high. Keep in mind that because of its metropolitan location, the beach does get extremely crowded with very competitive surfers. Strong riptides allow a very small take-off point, so only locals and visiting experts have a real shot at surfing here. Casual tourist can enjoy views of the beach from a long seaside pathway, which is dotted with small alfresco cafés, where you sit down for a relaxing meal at sunset. Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

  • This is probably the main sunset spot people come to in Rio. There is a good reason for that as sunset here is absolutely spectacular. I highly recommend doing it at least once while in Rio, the beach...  more »

  • Great to watch the sunset and having a Coconut water there. Amazing! Good for surfing.
  • I fell in love with this place! It's beautiful and I did not feel dangerous! There are some very cute cats out there! Wonderful!
  • Good view? Sure. But so filthy. It's one of the most visited spots in Rio but what is the local council doing to keep it clean? I don't know if it's locals or tourists to blame for the mess but I wish someone fixed it. Doesn't really encourage you to explore and stay around with the smell of open toilet nearby.
  • Very nice view of the Ipanema beach. Nice place to hang out and relax.
  • Its all about sunset from this spot, a gorgeous rocky outcrop jutting out into the ocean with great views of Ipanema Beach
