Lookout Hiking Trail
Instead of paying for the cable car rides up the Sugarloaf Mountain, most locals simply hike up Morro da Urca. This 215-m (705 ft) hill offers sweeping views of Corcovado, Copacabana, Guanabara Bay, and the Sugarloaf itself, which you can’t see when you’re actually on it. The hill is noted for being an important part of one of the largest urban rock climbing areas in the world, with more than 270 routes. You can, of course, always opt to take the cable car to the top of the hill, which features a visitor center, food stands, restrooms, and a souvenir shop. Plan your visit for a clear and sunny day, as the top of Sugarloaf and the surrounding hills often become enveloped in thick fog and clouds. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Rio de Janeiro holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Morro da Urca and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Did the trail. She is quite steep, flagged. I saw several families making the journey even with lap child. The view is beautiful. The location is cool because of the trees. Must be willing to climb because tired enough.

  • Place with an incredible view, you can see the planes landing and taking off from the nearest airport. Has bathrooms, water fountains and bars, all very clean and organized. Just be careful when going up and down the cable cars, it rocks a little when this stopped and has a crack, a will, when this moving doesn't scale.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
