Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial, Rio de Janeiro

4.3
Visit Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial to see all of downtown and the Guanabara Bay from a spot ideal for taking photographs. Located in the Flamengo neighborhood and within walking distance of other landmarks, such as the Modern Art Museum and the Carmen Miranda Museum, this monument commemorates Brazil's participation in the Second World War. Architects Mark Netto Konder and Helio Ribas Marinho won a nation-wide contest for the memorial’s design. The concrete memorial statue, completed in 1960, stands at 31 meters (102 ft) in height. The site also includes a mausoleum holding the remains of servicemen of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who died in action in Italy during World War II. • The whole country should be proud of their heroes. The monument is the tomb of our enlisted men who died during World War II. Very well maintained, ample parking. Recommend.

  • To all my fellow runners out there, there is a good cycling track behind the monument, that goes all the way down to the beaches on south. Worth giving a try on weekend mornings.
  • It gives you a nice view of Guanabara Bay. However, the monument contains little information about Brazilian participation in WWII. You can walk to here from the modern museum of art close by (it takes few minutes).
  • A tiny but important museum on the participation of Brazil in the WWII. A place to reflect and to take awesome pictures.
  • If you like history and you respect the soldiers this holly site is a must.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
