Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

  • We drove an hour from Ipanema hoping to see some cool markets, not so. I would not recommend venturing to Mercadao De Madureira if you are a tourist or do not know the area well. We did not feel at al...  more »
  • It was a place of cultural diversity and good cheap and interesting shopping centre. Today has many tools for plastic packaging and religious party. 80% now is just that. Do not recommend.

  • Who is from the northern zone knows and who is not supposed to pay a visit. This is the most famous popular trade of the River next to the Sahara, with several stores that sell a variety of trinkets and utilities: party, beauty, crafts, school supplies and stationery, prints, condiments, clothes and even animals (!!!). The prices are affordable and there is possibility to buy at wholesale or retail. Recommend that the visitor go with clothing and comfortable shoes, because that's a lot of wanderings, distributed by several corridors and floors. Depending on the day and the time (Saturday boils) you can't get away from the crowd and the heat, but if you're in Rio de Janeiro, after all. It's also good to have a look in the shops near the Mercadão along the Edgar Romero, especially for those who make wooden handicrafts. Take a morning and afternoon with off panning calmly products and prices. You can eat at any diner there. Several bus lines stop right in front, as well as the BRT in Mercadão station.
