MAR, Rio de Janeiro

4.3
#4 of 108 in Museums in Rio de Janeiro
A palace and a former bus station house rehabbed as gallery space house the MAR. Timely exhibitions display contemporary art from local artists alongside historic Latin American masters. A walkway connecting the two buildings is symbolic of the connection between Brazilian and international art. The MAR seeks to foster this connection and draw attention to Brazil’s significant contribution to the art world. If you're at Pier Maua, be sure to visit the Sea (art museum). the site is well structured, in the month of July the entry was free, but the value is 53 ha.and 25 ha beside. To gain access to the Museum, you have to go up the elevator to the roof, the view is very beautiful, to just go on the roof, it's free. On the terrace you can admire the view and take lots of pictures on the terrace you will have access to the Museum, where it will present your ticket. The exhibition was visited on the indigenous culture, I loved it, tells the story from the Indian discovery of Brazil until the present day. Recommend only if you are already around or if the current display is of your interest, do you have other attractions.

As all variables/exhibition itinerant Museum will depend of what is on display and the preference of the visitor. When I visited the exhibitions not detained there long. How was free (priorities on Sundays) and the goal was to have lunch at the restaurant on the 6th floor of the Moscow building there was no waste of time.

While the views from the 6th floor are great - I found the exhibitions here to be disappointing. With very specific themes and very limited explanations in English - I got bored rather quickly.  more »

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
