Governador Island is the largest island in Guanabara Bay, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has a population of about 300,000 inhabitants, in a small area of 42km2.Rio de Janeiro's main airport, Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport and the Galeão Air Force Base, are located on Governador Island and occupy about a third of it, in the western and northwestern parts. A small sea inlet that once existed on the northwestern shore was landfilled to build the airport's runway 10/28, thereby increasing the island's area a little bit.Often mentioned by cariocas simply as Ilha, Governador Island has some favelas, such as the pacified Morro do Dendê, the largest one, but it also has many middle-class neighborhoods and even the third better IDH index in the city, the Jardim Guanabara neighborhood. The island is connected to Fundão Island and to the mainland by a complex of expressway bridges and through a barge in Cocotá Terminal, transporting passengers to downtown in Rio.The name means "Governor's Island" because one of the first colonial governors of Brazil built a country house on the island in the 16th century. The native name for the island in Old Tupi was Paranapuã, which means "sea branch".

  • I live in Ilha do Governador, we have beautiful tourist places, we have the Escola de Samba União da Ilha do Governador, we have the beach of Jardim Guanabara, where during the day and night and super busy in front of the beach we have two great Hotels Sunshine, we have King restaurant careiro of cod, we have but two Clubs that has shows from Thursday to Sunday , where kids stay calm. The parents also know that and be some normal fights, but nothing to cause fears of leaving children to go. also has a large patrulhinhas that are during the concerts and events. We have the Igrejina of N.S. da Conceição Beautiful, we also have high in the Church N.S. Nazareth too beautiful. In Ribeira, great restaurants and a square that night is full of residents, and a great venue. and there is bus from place to place and several Vans. with cost of 3.80 per person, there's the Monet's great place to go hiking, and enjoy the restaurants, and Cocotá neighborhood cozy, with fairs night filled with cheap stuff and good for souvenirs. Who come will not regret it. and if you want to here the island go to Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema. We got the bus to pick up at the airport, you go straight. and these neighborhoods that cite, of them all, has bus that goes to airport with air conditioning. It costs 3.80-ticket per person. Well I hope I helped. Sometimes we want to come to the river and found that only place and Copacabana, Ipanema, and the Bar Prices are 5 times greater than the island. and who comes to the island can spend all day in other places, and spend less. Will the Tip.

  • I've never seen a beach so dirty, I don't know how the residents and their rulers don't take any offers, a lot of garbage all over the beach, filthy water, and don't see any cleanup, residents pigs and incompetent rulers.

  • It's certainly not a tourist attraction, but Governanador island has its charm. There are beaches and bucolic, hobbled by the polluted water. But the landscapes are beautiful, especially the Guanabara Bay. In the neighborhood, is the International Airport Tom Jobim.
