Governador Island is the largest island in Guanabara Bay, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has a population of about 300,000 inhabitants, in a small area of 42km2.Rio de Janeiro's main airport, Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport and the Galeão Air Force Base, are located on Governador Island and occupy about a third of it, in the western and northwestern parts. A small sea inlet that once existed on the northwestern shore was landfilled to build the airport's runway 10/28, thereby increasing the island's area a little bit.Often mentioned by cariocas simply as Ilha, Governador Island has some favelas, such as the pacified Morro do Dendê, the largest one, but it also has many middle-class neighborhoods and even the third better IDH index in the city, the Jardim Guanabara neighborhood. The island is connected to Fundão Island and to the mainland by a complex of expressway bridges and through a barge in Cocotá Terminal, transporting passengers to downtown in Rio.The name means "Governor's Island" because one of the first colonial governors of Brazil built a country house on the island in the 16th century. The native name for the island in Old Tupi was Paranapuã, which means "sea branch".

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.

  • Business card for tourists, is on it which is located the airport. Tourists typically don't even know what next for hotels, restaurants and shops. A complete neighborhood, especially in the neighborhood of Ribeira, where there's everything you can think of.

  • A part of the city with a wonderful view of Rio de Janeiro. Few sights, but with a busy nightlife. Worth it enjoy the night on the island with excellent bars and restaurants all around the edge of the Beach from the Spout.

  • Lower cost, but only attractions off the island. Dirty beaches and bad traffic. I didn't have the courage to walk into the sea due to dirt.
