Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Se, Rio de Janeiro

(4.9/5 based on 30 reviews on the web)
Feel the splendor of the bygone Empire of Brazil at Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Se, an old Carmelite cathedral that once served as the center of religious life in Rio. Brazilian emperors used the building as an imperial chapel, and the exquisite interior includes a long barrel vault ceiling gilded with wooden rococo ornaments, and side arches and balconies optimizing the organ's acoustics. The edifice features early 20th-century walls erected on 18th-century foundations, and retained the title of city cathedral during the republican period. Admire oval paintings and a carved stone baptismal font, and inquire about classical music concerts staged here occasionally. • In 1761 was inaugurated the new Church of the Carmelite monastery, built on the ruins of the primitive n. s. do Ó. Besides having been the Cathedral until the Decade of 1970, it was also the Royal Chapel, in the time of d. João VI and the Imperial Chapel, in the time of d. Pedro I and Pedro II. Was this church who, in 1808, d. João VI turned into Royal Chapel, when it came to Brazil. The Royal family was installed in the Palace of the viceroys, which today is the Imperial Palace, and located at Praça XV, while the Carmelite friars were displaced from your convent, which became the new home of Queen d. Maria I. The Church was the site of the marriage between Pedro I and the Archduchess of Austria d. Leopoldina. In 1822 with the independence of Brazil is high of the Royal Chapel to the Imperial Chapel. In 1829, d. Pedro I already a widower marries d. Amelia in the Imperial Chapel. In 1841, d. Pedro II is crowned Emperor of Brazil in the Imperial Chapel. In 1843, he married d. Teresa Cristina also in the Imperial Chapel. In 1846, the Princess Isabella is named in the Imperial Chapel and in 1864, he married there too with the count D'eu. In 1941 the Church was listed by IPHAN and in 1903 the waste mortals of Pedro Álvares Cabral are transferred from Portugal to this church. Be sure to watch on Sundays, at 9:00 in the morning, the mass celebrated in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite-cf Summorum pontificum. Beautiful and Sung in Latin, in my opinion surpasses the beautiful mass celebrated in the monastery of St. Benedict. This last, prefer to attend on weekdays at 7:30 o'clock in the morning, when it is quieter, because these days it's least disputed by tourists. Also be sure to meet the image of n. s. Capitis in the Church of n. s. do Carmo of the old Cathedral.

  • In the middle of so much movement, one of the most important avenues of downtown Rio de Janeiro, is an important stage of brazilian history, the place where, among many other facts, Dom Pedro I and II were crowned. The Church is sumptuous, with free admission, right there, in the heart of the city. Book five minutes from your trip to the Center to meet her. It's worth it.

  • The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé which was the Cathedral until the Decade of 1970, it was also the Royal Chapel, in the time of King John VI, the Imperial Chapel, in the time of d. Pedro I and Pedro II, honors not only our Lady of Mount Carmel, other saints are revered. Baptized, real weddings took place on your ship. And in its crypt are part of the remains of Pedro Álvares Cabral a visit not to be missed, worth schedule and do the tour. We've been there and who accompanied Robson.
