Flamengo Beach, Rio de Janeiro

2.8
#19 of 32 in Beaches in Rio de Janeiro
With its side-on view of Sugarloaf Mountain, the landscape of Flamengo Beach has been painted and photographed countless times. Thanks to its incredibly fine, white sand, the beach is a hot spot for jogging, soccer, volleyball, and other beach sports. Unlike its world famous sibling the Copacabana, Flamengo Beach is frequented mostly by locals, and you are less likely to be hassled by hawkers and other tourist traps. Like all beaches in Rio de Janeiro, water quality is an issue, but this is steadily improving as the government implements better sewage treatment facilities. We had a nice ride on this beach. The multiple playground of sneakers and especially present fe football programme attest to the importance of sport in general and the "futebol" especially for Brazilians. We have a beautiful panoramic view on the Bay of Guanabara, the bridge that connects Rio in Niteroi, the Santos Dumont Airport where a plane takes off every five minutes, the Sugar Loaf Mountain and her broom of cable cars. If you look you can see the monument of Christ the Redeemer on the Corcovado. The nearby just Flamengo Park is infested with cats (we saw a hundred), indeed we should call him the Park of cats. Brazilians seem to love them, but on the other hand the Park smell is unbearable...

Despite the name, is not a place for bathing, but for hiking, running, walking and to sunbathe, but with one of the most beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Accommodations in Rio de Janeiro cover as diverse a spectrum as the city itself. At the top end, you can find plenty of luxury hotels along the beaches of Zona Sul, the city's southern zone, which includes the renowned Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. For something to suit a budget, but with good beach access, look around the less crowded neighborhoods of Catele and Flamengo. If you want to stay as centrally as possible, without feeling like you're in a business district, look for lodgings in the colorful, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
